SUMMER SESSION 2019

BLOG POST #3,196 AT THE AICP-END

461 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2020

My colleagues have said Michelle Obama was going to enter the race as far back as April 2014- could they be correct this time around?
Wasco, CA, 08-01-2019 Thursday:  Well!  Here we are, the first day of August already and things are finally heating up as they normally do.  We had a great May and June, hardly any horribly hot days between the months whereas once July began, the temps began climbing and we realized it was little more than a fluke to have such an enjoyable late spring.
For a long time, many of my friends here at the American Institute of Culinary Politics-Elemental News of the Day have speculated that Michelle Obama was going to dip her toe into the world of presidential politics.  Most of them suggested that she would do it prior to 2016 in order to ensure her husband a third and fourth terms but I guess President Obama- for whatever reason- felt obligated to helping Hillary Clinton win the White House, a decision that proved to be a disaster.
If Mr. Obama felt obligated to helping Hillary win, then we must applaud him because he must have known that she most likely was not going to win the presidency.  If anything, he stripped her of the true shot she would have had to win back in 2008 by him managing to pull away much of her support and apply it to HIS run for the White House.
Back in 2016, I was firmly in the camp of Bernie Sanders, I saw him as a way of revitalizing the country and as someone who could win the race- if it was not so tilted in the favor of Hillary Clinton as it was.  I will admit, when Bernie lost the fight for the nomination and Hillary won it, I had to hold my nose and vote for her yet I did cast my vote for the nominee of my party.
I must admit, back in 2016, I was angry, extremely angry over the shenanigans that occurred that ripped the nomination from the hands of Senator Sanders and gave it to Hillary Clinton.  Here is what I said at the time about the crookedness that took place behind the scenes and which left Democrats stunned:
The exposure of the DNC emails prior to the opening bell of the Democratic Party Convention in Philadelphia exposed the entire rotten understructure of our party.  I, for one, never thought I would see crooked S**T such as what we saw spill out.  Not only did the DNC work against Bernie, the SOBS did their best to hammer him for being Jewish and for being an old man and for God knows what the heck else.”  (O’Malley, 22-August-2016)
This time around, I have faith, faith in Tom Perez, that he will not allow the games to occur that took place last time around because if they happen again, millions of Democrats such as my family and me will become devoid of faith in our party, something that will destroy the party.
Since 2016, however, I have awoken in my feelings regarding Bernie Sanders.  Here was a man I thought had our best interests in hand whereas now, I see him as little more than an opportunist, someone who bellows about raising the minimum wage and then lowballs his employees on his campaign staff.  What type of man does something like that?  Someone lacking the morals worthy of the highest office of the land.
From 2016 onward, my views towards Bernie began to change because the election of AOC opened my eyes to the threat posed to small business owners like my hubby, ET, and me.  Here is what I said about the Vermont senator back on August 10, 2018:
“I realize that many Democrats—especially the younger, less educated dummies out there—will view me with disgust and suspicion—but Bernie Sanders is a problem for the longevity of our party.  We need to smite whatever influence that he and Ocasio-Cortez have on our party as the more success they attain, the less likely our party will be able to avoid the current heading far left and over the falls.” (O’Malley, 10-August-2018)
Say what you will about Joe Biden, I think Joe has more of a chance at winning the White House than anyone else in the running because of his support in the black community which is why Barack will probably push Michelle into the running this time around because this would be their final shot at pushing her through the primaries.
We already see quite a few of the candidates seeking the nomination distancing themselves from the Obamas which is not good.  We see them talking about tearing Obamacare apart and going straight to government-run health care.  Granted, the Affordable Care Act has some problems but going straight to Medicare for All would be a disaster because workers with employer-provided health care- like ours- do not want to see their plans disappear.
While I think it would be great to have the Obamas back in the White House and Trump out of it, I fear that if the dynamic duo waits until the others have beaten one another to a bloody pulp, it could damage our party for the long run.  The current crop of candidates will label them as ‘interlopers,’ thus minimizing their far too many to list accomplishments for years to come.
Sadly, this is what can happen when someone comes back from the ‘dead,’ so to speak and gives it another shot.  I remember my history when Theodore Roosevelt decided to run for a third term as an independent (Bull Moose Party) and it diminished his place in history by making him look little more than an ‘opportunist.’  Still, if the Obamas want to save their crumbling legacy, this is the ONLY way in which, they can do it now.
See you tomorrow.

This is a cartoon caricature of me when I was working at a restaurant in Wasco, CA, my hometown.  The up-and-coming Bakersfield, California, street artist Simone did portraits of each of us here at the blog so I hope you like them as much as I, ahem, do.  Ah, well, I joined the Chefs de Cuisine of Greater Bakersfield, ACF, not long after it was chartered and am still a member even though the chapter is no longer in operation.  I began working in foodservice in the late 1960’s, moved from Wasco, CA, to Monterey, CA, and then returned to my hometown in 2004.  I have been a food server, a Mixologist, and am a Certified Cook.  I am equally at home in both the kitchen and behind the bar (and on the floor, too).  My passions are numerous, and my favorite is working in the bakery whenever I have had a chance.

FEATURED ALBUM OF THE DAY:

Peter Gabriel released his next album of collaborative original music on June 24, 2008, “Big Blue Ball.”  This album would be it for original material for a long, long time so it is worth giving a listen to as it is a special offering.  Once again, he has a studio full of musicians accompanying him, which creates an interwoven sound that is a delight to the ears as well as for the mind.  The album is one that deals with the issues of life as well as its loss so it is highly and deeply personal.  We hope you will seek it out and consider adding it to your growing music collection- you will enjoy it.

SPECIAL ALBUMS OF THE DAY:

Posted @ the Thursday, November 08, 2012 Blog Post:

Life seemed to deal Arthur Lee some bum dealings such as him going to prison for several years over phony gun charges.  When he got out, he joined forces with the band, Baby Lemonade, and delivered a smoking, tear-evoking rendition of one of the greatest psychedelic masterpieces of all time, “The Forever Changes Concert” (April 06, 2003).  Joining the legendary Arthur Lee (lead vocals/guitars/percussion/harmonica), Rusty Squeezebox (lead guitar/vocals), Michael Randle (guitar/vocals), David Chapple (bass/harmonica/backing vocals), and David “Daddy-O” Green (drums).  As Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys did years later with his performance of his classic, “Smile,” so Arthur Lee does here with the famed Love album.  Please, seek it out and enjoy it- we know you will.

Posted @ the Sunday, August 03, 2014 Blog Post A:

Ian Hunter, former vocalist of Mott the Hoople, released his fourth solo album, “You’re Never Alone with a Schizophrenic,” on March, 27, 1979.  As with his previous efforts, this album was not a commercial success either; yet, it is still a joy to listen to because of the artist’s amazing songwriting talents, superb music.  Joining the vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist were Mick Ronson (guitars, keyboards, vocals, percussion), Max Weinberg (drums/percussion), Garry Tallent (bass/vocals), and Roy Bittan (keyboards) and more musicians to add to the overall sound.  As seems to be the case, this album was not a massive seller either but it is what it is, if you like his original band and his vocal style, then this is a must-own album so why not seek it out, give it a listen, and consider adding it to your collection- you will be glad you did.
