SUMMER SESSION 2019

BLOG POST #3,166 AT THE AICP-END

491 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2020

Changing North Korea will not occur overnight
Century City, CA, 07-02-2019 Tuesday:  We witnessed an AMAZING thing this past LATE Saturday night/EARLY Sunday morning when President Trump, returning from the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, went to South Korea and met with North Korean despot, Kim Jong Un.  It was amazing to see the two men meet at the DMZ, to see the American president invited by his NOKO counterpart to walk across the ground separating the two nations and into North Korea for several minutes.  All the while news photographers and cameramen captured the scene for posterity.  Amazing, simply amazing folks because this was the first time in history when a sitting American president stood on the soil of the belligerent, isolated nation.
Rather predictively, the Democrats immediately sought to quash the get-together of the two world leaders in Freedom House along the DMZ, on the southern side of the border.  They criticized President Trump for his seeming desire to ‘hang with dictators and strongmen’ but folks, that was not it at all, it was the continuing efforts of the American president to pry open the door to the hermit kingdom and possibly, I repeat, possibly, to somehow get the North Koreans to enter the world of the living and not remain in one of the dead.
Since the end of World War II, liberation of Korea saw it divided into two quarreling nations thanks to the fledgling United Nations thinking it somehow beneficial to give the industrialized northern half to the Soviets to nurture while the agricultural southern half went to the Free World to maintain.   It sort of seemed like the Eloi and the Morlochs.
Of course, this all changed once the North surged across the DMZ and into South Korea in 1950.  It was a godawful bloody struggle, one that almost saw UN forces driven into the sea were it not for the Inchon landings led by famed U.S. commanding General Douglas MacArthur.  Eventually, we recovered our footing and almost liberated all of North Korea until Chinese forces swept across the Yalu River and almost drove us out of the country again.  We eventually arrived at a standstill that has lasted decades.
Since that time, tempers have flared various times between the two sides in the conflict.  During the Vietnam War, things almost got out of control as the North attempted to stir an uprising up in the South by sending commandoes and other clandestine forces across the dividing line, resulting in numerous bloody clashes and loss of life.  Eventually, everything simmered down but things were NEVER easy between the United States and North Korea.
When Donald Trump first became president, it appeared as though war was inevitable but he surprised everyone by stepping onto his backfoot and offering the North an opportunity to talk.  Talk they did, the first time being in Singapore, which looked promising and then a letdown months later in Vietnam.  The meeting at the DMZ this past weekend might set things back on track- we can only hope.
Looking at the critics of Trump, I feel compelled to ask, “What is wrong with these people?”
Are their memories so appallingly short that they do not remember President Barack Obama hanging with Raul Castro and Hugo Chavez, two of the world’s worst dictators and acting like it was all good?  It was not nor is it good, although the latter thug is dead while the former still retains a tight grip on his people.  If anything, Trump has been tough on both Latin American dictators as well as on North Korea (and Iran) which cannot be doing all that well at all because of the sanctions.
I think the various Democrats seeking to win the nomination of their party for the privilege of losing to President Trump in a historic 2020 landslide are agog with jealousy, just as are their elected leaders in House and Senate as well as all the babbling morons in the FAKE NEWS media.
I am sure they wish it had been Barack Hussein O who possessed the balls necessary to walk across the demarcation line and into the communist north just as we know that former president Bill Clinton once quipped that he wished ‘9-11 had happened under his watch’ so he would have had an opportunity to shine as did his successor, George W. Bush.
Donald Trump is doing what the American people elected him to do: stop wars and work to make America a great place again.  We would benefit if the North would gradually stop being so belligerent and if they would transfer their military nuclear programs over to providing a peaceful and reliable supply of energy for their people, they could transform their nation overnight.
Yes, Kim Jong Un is a murderous POS.  We know clinging to his missiles and his WMDs are the only things that- in his eyes- will preserve his clan and his power for generations to come and that the human rights abuses committed under his family’s time in power- including the murder of Otto Warmbier in NOKO custody- are atrocious.  However, to beat him over the head with this when this is all the little schmuck has ever known makes no sense.
It will take far longer to deprogram North Korea’s communists than it did German Nazis following the end of World War II because the Nazis were in power for ONLY 12 years whereas the NOKOs have been there for more than 70 years.
We will pick back up tomorrow and carry on with more of the same.  Thanks for joining me today and God bless.  Let us pray for peace.

This is a cartoonish rendition of me as I now am, old, tired, but at the top of the heap when it comes to classical Greek cuisine in the great Southland of California.  I began cooking in the 1960's in my native Greece before moving to Los Angeles, California, in the early 1970's. My family came here after World War II and I have had the pleasure of working both in my homeland as well as in the United States.  I apprenticed under an ACF Master Chef shortly after coming to L.A. and now here I am. I still am involved in professional food service as both an instructor and caretaker of my family’s business.
