SUMMER SESSION 2018

BLOG POST #2,841 AT THE AICP-END

EIGHTY-EIGHT DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2018

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could actually believe the sincerity of Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid and other NFL players?
Wasco, CA, 08-11-2018 Saturday:  Friends, I will admit that I am not looking forward to the upcoming NFL season, mostly because the league cannot come out and say, “EVERYONE on the field of play is going to stand for the flag of the United States and its anthem or will lose their jobs.”  Let them go play in the Canadian Football League, if they go north of the border, then they should have nothing to protest but will not make as much money.  They love the game, right?
Once again, I understand that I am outside the circle of young black and liberal schools of thought.  The youngsters believe the best way to protest injustice and unfair treatment of our people by law enforcement is to go out, kneel for the anthem and the flag, and thereby piss off the majority of the fans whose money goes into the pockets of the players and the owners who employ them.  Yes, they are employees.
We have a real problem in our country with police violence on young black men and other minorities, which is something that troubles my family and me.  We would love to see the players work at improving relations between the nation’s police departments and the minority communities they patrol.
Going out and driving fans away from the national pastime and causing owners’ revenues to decline is only going to weaken the sport to the point that the WNBA or Major League Soccer stands a real chance at supplanting the National Football League all because the players do not anger the fans or cause their owners woe.
I realize there are many out there who view Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid (among others) as heroes but these two maggots have caused far more harm for the black community than they have improved its conditions, all because they are self-centered and spoiled examples of what is wrong with the black community and how others view it.
I would urge them to become positive role models, not to repeat the mistakes of the American Olympians of the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where two members of the team—Tommie Smith and John Carlos--stood on the winner’s dais, clenched fists held high, which caused many of our fellow Americans to gasp in anguish.
Yes, the 1960s were horrible times to be black in this country, we were at war with society at large because it was now or never for us to claim our civil rights.  We were going to die fighting for them or we were going to gain them.  We followed Dr. King where he led us and we weren’t going to stop.
The war in Vietnam claimed the lives unfairly of many young black men, men who could not gain the necessary deferments so they could avoid the fate that awaited many of them.
Yes, it is true that other minorities and poor whites and ill-educated members of society lost their lives and limbs in an unwinnable conflict but it fell atop black folks much more harshly than it did for others.
During various summers throughout the 1960s, race riots broke out in many cities, mostly due to mistreatment by the cops of our people but also because of unfair housing and labor conditions, high crime rates, dangerous communities, and dilapidated schools.
Everything for which people shed blood, tears, and even lives led to a bettering of society in general and for blacks and other racial minorities in particular.  Now, when we see these spoiled, wealthy, and talented young men disrespect the nation and its flag by taking a knee in front of God and country, instead of improving the world around them, they damage it.
What we see occurring in Chicago on a weekly basis should shock everyone yet I do not recall seeing any NFL players marching in the streets, demanding OUR own people to stop shedding our blood.  Where are they?  Why are they so silent?  I demand that Colin Kaepernick put his money where his mouth is and lead a march through the South Side of Chicago demanding an end to the bloodshed and violence.
I sincerely believe that few of our NFL players are aware of what they stand to lose.  At some point, owners are going to have to cut their losses as if viewing audiences and fans in attendance at very expensive games begins to decline, what is the point in owning a professional football team?  Perhaps, a baseball or basketball franchise will be better instead?
Friends, it brings me sadness to criticize members of my community but there are ways in which, we can enlist support from others rather than pushing it away, perhaps for years to come.  We must foster engagement between America’s minority communities and the law enforcement agencies charged with keeping them safe so we can put the nagging problems to rest.
I am as tired as you are of young black men being shot and killed all for the crime of being black and because law enforcement fears us.  However, we also must admit that until we stop the senseless violence occurring in places such as Chicago, people will continue to fear us and will not heed our very legitimate cries for help.
NFL players, how about doing the right thing instead of creating additional trouble for the rest of us and our cause?  You might do some good if you could.

This is a cartoon caricature of me when I was working at a restaurant in Wasco, CA, my hometown.  The up-and-coming Bakersfield, California, street artist Simone did portraits of each of us here at the blog so I hope you like them as much as I, ahem, do.  Ah, well, I joined the Chefs de Cuisine of Greater Bakersfield, ACF, not long after it was chartered and am still a member even though the chapter is no longer in operation.  I began working in foodservice in the late 1960’s, moved from Wasco, CA, to Monterey, CA, and then returned to my hometown in 2004.  I have been a food server, a Mixologist, and am a Certified Cook.  I am equally at home in both the kitchen and behind the bar (and on the floor, too).  My passions are numerous, and my favorite is working in the bakery whenever I have had a chance.
