SUMMER SESSION 2018

BLOG POST #2,857 AT THE AICP-END

SEVENTY-THREE DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2018

Due to Hurricane Lane, we bounce all over the place today
Honolulu, HI, 08-27-2018 Monday:  Aloha, welcome to my second week of the year and thanks to Hurricane Lane, I could be ‘behind the times’ in my news coverage and conversation as I had to get the first couple of posts written quickly and emailed to Oildale in case we lost power in the Islands.
I also want to say, “Happy Birthday” to cofounder of the blog, Chef Brian, as today is his day and I must say, you do not look a day older, my friend, than you did last year.  I will set up some Pele stones for you on the northern shore of Maui for you as a good wish for many more years to come.  We love you here and miss you and hope you return here one day and join us where you belong.
We had our primary elections about two weeks ago and it appears that Senator Mazie Hirono is going to win another term with ease.  She had 201,604 votes as opposed to some challengers running to unseat her and the Republican who will face off against her in November, Ron Curtis, had 6,365 votes to win the GOP primary.  I think Senator Hirono has a lock on another term.
The race for the District 1 seat in the House of Representatives has former Congressman Ed Case seeking to return to the House.  He claimed 47,482 votes against his Democratic foes while the Republican who will go up against him in November—Cam Cavasso—won the nomination with 10,552 votes against his GOP challengers.
The District 2 seat in the House of Representatives held by Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard seems to be a lock for her.  She faced some far-left challengers but won the right to face the Republican challenger, Brian Evans, in November with a whopping 94,629 votes.  Evans, a former Democratic candidate in 2014 for the U.S. Senate seat had a miserly 12,331 votes running unopposed for the nomination.
In our gubernatorial race, it looks as though the incumbent, Democrat David Ige, will win another term without a hitch as he outdistanced some left-wing challengers, winning the nomination easily with 124,528 votes as opposed to next closest primary challenger, Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa, with 107,583 votes.
On the GOP side, Hawaii state Congresswoman Andria Tupola, a long, longshot, beat her Republican rivals with 17,282 votes.  This obviously does not bode well for the GOP, which in Hawaii, clings to a few seats here and there at the local level but none on the national stage.  It is what it is, as Stinkbug would say.
Although Hawaii is a small state with little more than a million-plus people here, we are a strong Democratic Party stronghold and have been since 2010 when Neil Abercrombie became governor.
While many Democrat seats on the mainland disappeared as Republican anger at Barack Obama overwhelmed them, we Hawaiian Island Democrats solidified the hold on the islands to the point where few Republicans stand a chance at winning…much of anything.
One of the things with which, we have constant problems here in the Islands is the ongoing constant string of auto thefts.  At times the number of vehicles pinched rises and lowers much like the waves of the ocean but lately what with the mythical ‘300 Club’ or a group dedicated to stealing a car a day or more and then using them in the commission of other crimes or worse, the vehicles simply disappear, people are angry.
I know those of you on the Mainland ask the question, “Hey, Cherry- you live on an island, where do all of the cars go?”
Well, some disappear, never to be seen again because somehow, the find themselves loaded onto freighters at one of the ports that seagoing vessels come to while others are found abandoned in the countryside or torched like a county vehicle not all that long ago.  Heck, they even stole a bus, if you can believe that.
I hate to say this because it is not good for tourism for which, everyone living here depends upon one way or another but rental cars and tourists fall prey to the car thieves roaming the main thoroughfares and backroads of the state.  People must always be careful lest they see their beloved car disappear, perhaps lost forever.
Well, I will wrap things up now as I want to be brief as I am aware readership has dropped down once again because my colleagues become full of themselves and write posts that drone on and on as though they were writing for a literary magazine and not a blog.
I hope we survive Hurricane Lane as not since Iniki have we had a storm like Lane, she is a big one and parts of the state have seen massive amounts of water descend upon them as though from the Bible.  I think we will make it though but it could be dicey for a while which is why I began writing my posts last week.

Up-and-coming Bakersfield, California, street artist, Simone, created this cartoonish caricature of me so we can keep our identities on the down low due to increasing threats, Web intrusions and threats, and so we do not lose our professional businesses because of our politics here at the AICP-END Blogs.
That said, I began my career in the early 1970’s when I apprenticed to cook under one of the masters on the Big Island where I was born.  I moved to Oahu in the early 1980’s after having worked in both Kona and Hilo, HI, and have been there for most of my professional career.
Moreover, I have also worked on Maui for a few years (1995-1998) and have been on Kauai (2001-2003) before returning to Honolulu.  My goal is to prepare the next generation of chefs for the future and to help the underprivileged in their struggle to attain careers in the foodservice industry.

FEATURED ALBUM OF THE DAY:

Rainbow released an official bootleg from a show recorded live in Boston, Massachusetts back in 1981.  “Boston 1981” came out on May 13, 2016 and is well worth the price of admission.  The lineup features Richie Blackmore (guitars), Roger Glover (bass), and David Rosenthal (keyboards), Chuck Burgi (drums), and Joe Lynn Turner (vocals).  This is a better effort than some of the other shows, which is why we love this album.  Use the link we provide you here so you can visit the greatest online marketplace in the world, Amazon.com where you can pick it up in the format, condition, and price that works best for you.  Let us know what YOU think.

Friday, January 17, 2014 Blog Post:

Today, we begin promoting the music of the great English super-group, Cream.  Composed of Eric Clapton (guitars/vocals formerly of the Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers), Jack Bruce, (bass, harmonica, piano, and vocals), and Ginger Baker (percussion and spoken word), both from the Graham Bond Organization. The three members combined forces as they were tired of the restrictions the other bands had forced upon them and sought to light the world on fire with some wild, heavy-duty rock.  The band exploded onto the scene in 1966 with their first CD, “Fresh Cream” (December 09, 1966).  This is a great debut effort that showed the promise of what was to come.  You can buy this at Amazon.com by using the above link and picking it up at a great price!
