SPRING SESSION 2018

BLOGPOST #2,714 AT THE AICP-END

TWO HUNDRED-AND-FOURTEEN DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2018

Roman history can teach modern Americans many important lessons regarding our history
Pasadena, CA, 04-06-2018 Friday: Yesterday, I made a sly reference to the First Triumvirate, historically, the first three-way dictatorship of the Western World.  In it, three avaricious and grasping, powerful men came together, Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great, and Marcus Crassus, three men who would each suffer the discomfiture disgrace of death on a physical or political battlefield, one that would claim the life of each one, one by one.
The three men required one another to fulfill their destinies, however.  Julius Caesar needed Pompey the Great to remain in his corner while he waged a decade-long war in Gaul, so he married his daughter off to the famed general.  Crassus, the friend and benefactor of the younger Caesar needed to wage war from his governorship in Syria against the Parthians, the forerunners of the Persian Empire while Pompey wanted to remain in Rome, doting in power and the spotlight.
Things went to hell for each man.  Crassus died while he was on campaign, sick as a dog and traveling in a litter, had the ignominy of watching the defeat of his army at the hands of a powerful Parthian Empire.
Meanwhile, Pompey’s wife, Julia, the daughter of Caesar, died and avaricious politicians such as Marcus Bibulus, who surrounded the famed general, Caesar haters all of them, managed to pull him away from his former father-in-law and to denounce him an “outlaw” when he sought to return to Rome to seek the consulship for the second time in his political career.
For Caesar to do this, the law required that he lay down his Imperium, the designated rank that all governors of provinces carried that made them virtual dictators, before crossing the Rubicon River, the natural boundary that separated Rome (aka Italy) from the rest of the world.
In so doing, the setting aside of his Imperium would make Caesar vulnerable to Roman law, law his rivals among the Senate and in the city sought to use against him, perhaps even to strip him of rank, wealth, and maybe even imprison him over how he fought the war in Gaul and twisted financial support to not only win the brutal conflict but to enrich himself as he did so.
The wishy-washy Pompey, a man bothered by the military exploits of others if they minimized his, issued a declaration warning Caesar that he would become an ‘outlaw’ should he cross the Rubicon if his army accompanied him.
As we know, Caesar weighed the options, eventually letting the dice fall where they may and so the famous general crossed the dividing line into northern Italy with one legion accompanying him.  This immediately set in motion panic among those in Rome because not since Caesar’s uncle Lucius Cornelius Sulla become the dictator had the Senate and its members faced such a potential threat by one so skilled as was Caesar.
Historians tell us that Caesar truly did not want to ‘go to war with Rome,’ nor did he want to become either an outcast or a dictator.  Yet, the act of crossing the Rubicon sans his Imperium made him the first, which would lead to him becoming the second and so setting his fate in motion.
A gifted general, Caesar bested all his enemies, chasing them down one by one with his army and followers in tow.  He chased Pompey to Egypt where the agents of Ptolemy, the Pharaoh, got ahold of him first, beheaded him, and then presented the grisly trophy to Caesar when he arrived on their shores.
This obviously was not what Caesar truly sought or expected; no, he wanted to make things right with the general, his former son-in-law, and former co-ruler, but it was what it was and led to the future dictator involving himself with Cleopatra, having a son out of wedlock with her, and then waging a war against traditionalist rebels seeking to depose her in Cairo for nearly a year.
Following his victory there, he pursued his remaining enemies to the western coast of North Africa where Cato the Younger denied Caesar the victory he coveted by committing suicide.  This led Caesar to return home, the Roman world at ‘peace’ (or so he believed), and the eventual cabal that formed against him (led by Brutus and Cassius, among others), which eventually assassinated him on his way to the Forum one day.
For anyone to be as stupid as Thomas Friedman who believes that if a Constitutional crisis removes Donald Trump from office and that a junta of George W. Bush, Barack Hussein Obama, and most likely a third former president such as Bill Clinton would or could make things ‘right,’ most likely, they would set in motions such as a soft dictatorship of sorts that would eventually lead to a falling out among the members and eventual war.
We cannot allow something this imprudent and thoughtless, this irrational ever to occur and must follow the rules as set out for us in the Constitution should President Donald J. Trump go down to impeachment.
See you tomorrow.

SPECIAL ALBUMS OF THE DAY:

Thursday, July 14, 2011 Blog Post:

Canned Heat: “Under Dutch Skies 1970-1974” 2007
This is yet another archive release, one that Canned Heat recorded during the sessions that would end up on their classic, “Canned Heat Europe 1970” tour and beyond into the mid-1970s.  “Under Dutch Skies 1970-1974” (2007) features some great music although some critics will bitch and moan that the recordings are not up to the standards of other bands, say, the Grateful Dead for instance.  Still, fans of the band welcome any additional releases that give the listener the opportunity to hear music they might not have heard otherwise.  Besides, none of the modern-day bands can compare with ANY of the 1960s-born-and-bred rockers such as the Heat.  Please, use our link to go to Amazon.com and pick it up in the format, the condition, and the price that is right for you—you will be so glad you did.
Tuesday, September 10, 2013 Blog Post:

The Turtles released their second ‘best of’ compilation in late 1970, “More Golden Hits.”  If you have yet to avail yourself of the music of this rock foundation band, this is an excellent way in which to do it.  We hope you will use the link we provide you here, so you can depart on a digital, mind-blowing journey to the world’s GREATEST online marketplace, the one, the only Amazon.com.  Once there, you can pick it up in the format, the condition, and the price that works best for you- you will be glad you did.
