Should white people apologize to black folks for slavery? No, of course not because blacks and Native Americans would have to apologize for having owned slaves, too

SPRING SESSION 2018

BLOGPOST #2,702 AT THE AICP-END

TWO HUNDRED-AND-TWENTY-SIX DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2018

Amazing what ‘feel-good liberals’ come up with- isn’t it?
Los Angeles, CA, 03-25-2018 Sunday:  Friends, this is the final day of the week for me and then tomorrow, Chef Elvin C. McCardle arrives to do the week of Easter.  One of the things I wanted to comment upon when I came to Bakersfield, California—well, Oildale, technically, one of the most unique towns in California where our offices are located—I read a letter in the newspaper in which, the author suggested that white people apologize to black folks for slavery as though an ‘apology’ would do them a world of good.  Really?  If it would put the specter of racism to rest once and for all, people, I would; but it won’t.
I am always amazed at how ‘feel-good’ liberals come up with preposterous ideas such as a recent letter by a gentleman here in Bakersfield suggesting that ‘white men should apologize for the institution of slavery.’  The author felt that if white folks did this, then everyone would feel good and could move on.
I find attitudes such as this somewhat ‘suspect,’ to say the least.  Why should not everyone apologize to one another for every perceived or real sin from the colonization of North America to the formation of the United States, to the Civil War and the freeing of the slaves, and to the present?
As I recall, the United States had made amazing progress in the putting of racism behind us that is, until a backbencher senator from Illinois became president and then everyone critical of him and his Saul Alinsky-Karl Marx policies suddenly became ‘racist.’
As for the letter writer, here is the deal: according to authors Darlene Clark Hine, William C. Hine, and Stanley Harrold writing in “The African-American Odyssey, Volume One to 1877,” white were not the ONLY slave-owners in American society.
First, we will contend with WHITE ownership of slaves in the Old South: according to the authors of the above-mentioned textbook, out of a ‘population of nine million white Southerners, ONLY 383,673 owned slaves (including their families) which made it less than 25-percent of the population owning slaves.’  (Hine, Hine and Harrold 125-26)
Yet, ALL white men—especially those from the North—find themselves under attack for something in which, they had NO hand.
Whites were not the only slave-owners, however; a considerable number of blacks owned black slaves, with the authors singling out three black slave-holding families as being equal of any of the white plantation owners: ‘William Johnson of Natchez, Louisiana, Margaret Mitchell Harris of South Carolina, and Betsy Somayrac of Natchitoches, Louisiana.’  (Hine, Hine and Harrold 126)
History also tells us that numerous Native American tribes—particularly, the ‘Five Civilized Tribes,’ Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and the Seminoles—whom the Andrew Jackson administration would expel beginning in the 1830s, so the land could then be ‘redistributed’ to white Southerners—all owned slaves, which was a sign of their ‘civilizing.’
What I seek to say here is that while most slave-holding Southerners were white, there were black and Native American slaveowners so should not everyone apologize to everyone else?  It sure seems that way to me, folks so perhaps we should do it- everyone give one another a hug and say, “I’m sorry.”  There.  Feel better?
From a historical perspective, the election of Abraham Lincoln set in motion events that would reshape our country, most notably the Civil War and its immediate and later aftermath, respectively the Compromise of 1877, which lead to a withdrawal of Federal forces from the South and a restoration of ‘white power,’ which in turn led to the battle for Civil Rights in the 1960s.
It is worth noting that Abraham Lincoln—although he found the institution of slavery repugnant—did not run in 1859 on its eradication.  No, he only sought to limit it to the territory in which it already existed and to prevent its spread to new territories as they opened to settlement.
During the Civil War, Delaware and Maryland maintained their slaves until the war’s conclusion although they were ‘tentatively’ in the Northern camp.
As for the South, until the North gave up all hope of ending the war through some sort of reconciliation and the war became a ‘total war,’ meaning only victory by one side or another ended it, slavery was not its main purpose.  The main purpose was the continued holding of the Union as it stood.
In 1863, the Lincoln administration gave up hope of a civil resolution and so we have the Gettysburg Address, and its associated acts such as ‘freeing the slaves’ and a ‘fight to the death,’ so-to-speak.  There was no way the South could win, and its inevitable destruction led to future problems.
Folks, as a white man of intelligence and compassion, NO one should have to apologize to anyone else for something he or she did not do.  I did not own slaves, my family did not own slaves and even if we did, I had no hand in it whatsoever so why am I to blame?
What would be truly great is if the American educational system taught TRUE American history and not leftist claptrap designed to set people at one another’s throats.  Enough with identity politics, finger-pointing, and nonstop muckraking, can we move beyond this bull crap at some point…soon?
Thanks—we will meet again so I will see you then.  Oh, how about that budget Trump signed on Friday?  One-term president like Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush?  I bet.  See you soon.

Deep Purple released its fifth studio effort on July 09, 1971, “Fireball.”  This album was the precursor effort to the one that would make them into megastars, “Machine Head.”  Although the band had mixed views on the quality of the tunes and the recording efforts, it continued demonstrating that the band was growing by leaps and bounds in both its musical abilities and its songwriting efforts.  The lineup remained the same as the preceding effort, Ian Gillian (vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Paice (drums), Richie Blackmore (guitars), and Jon Lord (keyboards). We hope you will use the link we provide you here, so you can go directly to Amazon.com where you can pick it up in the format, the condition, and the price that works best for you- you will be glad you did.

FEATURED ALBUM OF THE DAY:

SPECIAL ALBUMS OF THE DAY:

Saturday, July 02, 2011 Blog Post:

“Live at the Turku Rock Festival 1971” (1996)

The album for today is one of the best live albums released from the Canned Heat archives.  This album features a reformulated band performing at the Turku Rock Festival in Finland shortly after the death of Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson.  Aptly titled, “Live at Turku 1971,” (1996), it features Joel Scott Hill (guitars) and bassist Antonio de la Barreda filling in for Larry “the Mole” Taylor.  After the band recorded the studio album “Historical Heads and Ancient Figures,” the band went out on tour.  Following the concert tour, both Hill and Barreda left the group for whatever reasons.  This album captures a stellar performance with the band delivering the goods late in the evening after spending the entire day drinking and smoking dope.  If you want to hear the refurbished Heat at its best, this is the album for YOU.  Please, use our link to redirect your browser to Amazon.com where you can get it in the format, the condition, and the price that rocks your socks.

Thursday, August 29, 2013 Blog Post:

As with our previous go-round with the Dead, we pick up with another of the great psychedelic bands out of Frisco, the Quicksilver Messenger Service! Like many other great groups of the time, many new recordings from the early days have popped up, our tenth is their “Anthology Box Set 1966-1970,” (released in 2013) truly an awesome recording but one we neglected to present the first time around!  Please take the convenient link above to go to Amazon.com so you can buy it! —you’ll be glad you did!
