THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CULINARY POLITICS-ELEMENTAL NEWS OF THE DAY COMMENTARY-OPINION-SPORTS-FOOD SERVICE FOR MONDAY, MARCH 05, 2018 BY CHEF CHERYL LA TIGRE

WINTER SESSION 2017-18

BLOGPOST #2,682 AT THE AICP-END

TWO HUNDRED-AND-FORTY-SIX DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2018

Well…the local girl lost the fight!
Honolulu, HI, 03-05-2018 Monday:  The last time I was here—last August, to be exact—I told everyone I was looking forward to the upcoming batch of fights at Lemoore, California, on Indian tribal land.  Invicta FC 25 saw a local girl, Rachel Pa’aluhi going up against Yana Kunitskaya (a Russian!) in the Main Event and sadly, I must report, Rachel got her butt whooped.  Oh, she did not suffer an embarrassing loss, but lost on points.  We hope the next time the two meet we will have an outcome that will make the island folks proud.
Friends, I want to say how glad I am to be back here in California as coming to the mainland always makes me feel better about what is going on back at home.  Currently, the local folks here in Cali are all running around with their panties in a wad, upset over how after having declared themselves to be a ‘sanctuary state,’ ICE is here, roaming free, hunting down the illegals wherever they hide.
We have the same problems back at home, many Hawaiians do not want to become a sanctuary for illegal aliens because they bring crime, drugs, and other pestilence to a still-pristine environment.  Not only them but the homeless who make it here from the mainland cause many parts of the Islands and of course, my home town of Honolulu become as big an urban blight as anyone finds driving to Bakersfield from LAX.
Yes, we are the Aloha State, we welcome folks from around the world; however, we would love to control who comes in, how numerous they are, and to know where the heck they are coming from.  Yet, the Democrats who control our state (and do not forget- I am a lifelong Democrat but am wavering a bit) do not seem to care who comes to our spectacular shores, where they go, or what they do.
Last year, Kona on the Big Island was in a titter as ICE was roaming around snapping up illegals working on the coffee farms.  Just as Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf was warning the illegals to take cover, so, too, was the head of the Kona Coffee Farmers Association, Suzanne Shriner, who was doing everything in her power to protect the thousands of illegals working the coffee plantations.
Hawaii used to be like California, we had common sense here whereas now, both states as well as Oregon and Washington, all seem to be at war with the federal government.
Even more disgusting, they defend their illegal aliens, do not hand them over to federal law enforcement when they come looking for them, which means the ICE agents have no choice other than to enter farms, plantations, and anywhere else they expect to locate and apprehend illegals.
What blows my mind is that if our state and local leaders do not want to enforce certain federal laws, how about not enforcing any of them.  Can we not dispense with the federal income tax?  That would be great just as would being able to own any firearm we so choose, use it in any lawful manner we like, how about throwing out some of those laws, too?
I must say, too, that this is not new, the problem has been with us for quite a while.  I can recall back in the late 1980s walking down the aisles at the local Safeway supermarket and hearing a foreign language wafting over from the next aisle.  I thought, ‘what is this language’ as it resembled none that I had ever heard and walked around.  Lo and behold, it was Mexican field workers who labored in the pine and cane fields.
I will say that as the migrant work force has continued moving in, lock, stock, and barrel, to settle down, and to bring in multiple family members, our politics have shifted slowly from moderate Democrat to crackpot, loony tunes despotic liberalism, which is not healthy for our state or our people.
It is high time we began doing something about it and as I said the last time I was here, ‘can we find a way to round up the illegals and send them back from whence they came and without being asked to come?  That would be so ono!
Surely, we can find local workers who would love to work for better wages instead of bringing in a migrant workforce that never seems to ‘migrate back home.’  We must work for the people and not for the noncitizens so in this endeavor, I support President Donald J. Trump.  Mr. President, can you spare Hawaii additional ICE agents?
Aloha, my friends; I will see you back here tomorrow.

This is a photo of me back in the 1980’s when I was working at a hotel in Honolulu, HI, on Waikiki Beach.  I began my career in the early 1970’s when I apprenticed to cook under one of the masters on the Big Island where I was born.  I moved to Oahu in the early 1980’s after having worked in both Kona and Hilo, HI, and have been there for most of my professional career.  I have also worked on Maui for a few years (1995-1998) and have been on Kauai (2001-2003) before returning to Honolulu.  My goal is to prepare the next generation of chefs for the future and to help the underprivileged in their struggle to attain careers in the foodservice industry.

FEATURE ALBUM OF THE DAY:

SPECIAL ALBUMS OF THE DAY:

Hooker ‘n’ Heat” (1971)

In January 15, 1971Canned Heat released a double album featuring legendary blues man, John Lee Hooker, aptly entitled, “Hooker ‘n’ Heat.”  This is the final album to feature guitarist, vocalist, and harp player, Alan Wilson, who died during its recording from a self-inflicted drug overdose.  Alan had a demanding time unlike the rest of the band, in finding women, having relationships, and making friendships with other people outside the band.  Most think it was a purposeful overdose because besides those issues, he also was going blind due to a disease he could not reverse.  He passed away at the home of Bob Hite while in a sleeping bag above the house in Topanga Canyon, a place he found comforting and peaceful.  We feel sad about this because yes, life can be full of challenges and the man was a great musician and had a unique vocal style.  Anyhow, this is a great CD with the band chugging along with John Lee Hooker playing his blues songs with the band backing him.  Guitarist Henry “Sunflower” Vestine also returned to the fold so this is a great CD everyone should seek out at the world’s greatest online marketplace, Amazon.com.

This is the first time we have done something like this, but we are picking up with the Grateful Dead where we left off last time, back on 01-11-2012 when we concluded approximately 140 albums of them in a row.  Since that time, a whole bunch more of their music has come out and we pick up today with “Road Trips Volume 4, No. 5,” yet another excellent addition to this ongoing excellent series.  This album first came out in 2011 and is an awesome offering so please! Take the convenient link posted above, go to Amazon.com, and buy it now! Thank you!
