WINTER SESSION 2017-18

BLOGPOST #2,684 AT THE AICP-END

TWO HUNDRED-AND-FORTY-FOUR DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2018

Election time in the Islands coming in August so not much time to get going
Honolulu, HI, 03-07-2018 Wednesday:  I must admit, I do love coming to Bakersfield as it allows Lalo and I to leave behind Island Life for about a week or so.  Lalo and I love visiting the various casinos run by Native Americans here in California, taking time to go to the Tachi Palace, to Chukchansi, and when my week is up here at the blog, we are going to visit San Manuel Casino for the first time.  We always wish that Hawaii would bless us with a land-based casino or two, maybe put one on Niihau, or on Kahoolawe where we could visit by shuttle and then return at the end of the day.  Just dreaming, folks, just dreaming.
The thing about gambling in Hawaii is that WE CAN gamble, we just have to visit either the Carnival Cruise Lines or the Norwegian Cruise Lines.  Yes, they have slots and other gaming machines but somehow, it lacks the ambiance and the amenities the Native Americans love slathering on their guests.
Oh, do not misunderstand me, we both love the cruise lines, but it would be super-swell if we had some massive land-based casinos as then all of Asia would flock to the Islands and business would continue increasing exponentially.  Love those big words!
Onto election news, as a longtime Democrat, both my husband and I have towed the party line most of the time, but I am telling you, this ‘Russian thing’ is getting out of control and bears the promise of making our party appear weak and one-dimensional.
While we Americans spend excessive amounts of time navel-gazing, we could spend time building a multi-story platform as we once did instead of placing everything we hold dear on the back of Robert Mueller III and his ongoing dredging of dirt on the Trump administration. We must stand for something other than Trump hatred (and Trump does some things we like such as dealing with illegal immigrants).
That said, we have several months to go here in Hawaii before our midterm elections arrive on August 11, 2018.  Senator Mazie Hirono will be up for reelection and we see no one trouncing her, which is good, she is a stalwart defender of the Islands and our lovely way of life.
Tulsi Gabbard is up for reelection in Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District while 1st Congressional District Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa will be stepping aside so she can run for the state governorship.
Four strong Democrats seek to replace Congresswoman Hanabusa, Doug Chin (State Attorney-General), Kaniela Ing (State Representative), Donna Kim (State Senator), and Ernie Martin (Honolulu City Councilman).  I like Representative Ing as he wants to do much by way of the hemp industry while Lalo is old-fashioned and likes the rock-solid Martin.  That’s the ‘big city boy’ in my husband.
The interesting thing about the seat held by Congresswoman Gabbard—a very popular figure here and a heavy-duty supporter of the U.S. military—is that she has two Democratic primary challengers.
Throwing their hats into the ring are two relatively unknown candidates (at least by outside standards), Sherry Alu Campagna (a sweetheart if ever there was one) and John Reiss, a real far-left fellow, who considers himself part of the ‘Resistance.’
Running on a platform of anger and hatred is not necessarily a winning ticket here in Hawaii where we are all about love, loving and caring about one another, and doing everything possible to make the Islands a better place for our families and ourselves.
Still, some people are unhappy with Congresswoman Gabbard in that she is more of a blue dog Democrat whereas Mr. Reiss wants to go after President Trump and go after him hard.  If anything, Ms. Campagna exudes and promotes Hawaii’s values, which is important to most everyone who calls these islands, “home.”
This will conclude today’s conversation, but we will of course, reconvene tomorrow morning at the hellacious hour of 12:01 A.M.  We also will be at the secondary blog so make sure, you visit me at both.
Aloha.

This is a photo of me back in the 1980’s when I was working at a hotel in Honolulu, HI, on Waikiki Beach.  I began my career in the early 1970’s when I apprenticed to cook under one of the masters on the Big Island where I was born.  I moved to Oahu in the early 1980’s after having worked in both Kona and Hilo, HI, and have been there for most of my professional career.  I have also worked on Maui for a few years (1995-1998) and have been on Kauai (2001-2003) before returning to Honolulu.  My goal is to prepare the next generation of chefs for the future and to help the underprivileged in their struggle to attain careers in the foodservice industry.
