THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CULINARY POLITICS-ELEMENTAL NEWS OF THE DAY COMMENTARY-OPINION-SPORTS-FOOD SERVICE FOR THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2017 BY CHEF ROLAND CARL DAVIS, EDITOR

WINTER SESSION 2017

BLOGPOST #2,607 AT THE AICP-END

THREE HUNDRED-AND-NINETEEN DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2018

Being realistic, things do not look good for Democrats in the U.S. Senate
Arvin, CA, 12-21-2017 Thursday: The past couple of days, we have spent time handicapping what I, your host, think will happen in the 2018 Senate Elections.  Granted, things could turn on a dime if the investigation into President Trump bears fruit but that is not something upon which, I want to hang my daily happiness.  I seriously doubt whether I could handle another letdown akin to the one we felt on November 09, 2016.  That was a disaster for the books, one that almost sent me down the street to a crack dealer.
The thing going for the Republicans in 2018 is that they have very few seats to defend whereas we Dems have far too many and in this time of fake news (yes, I believe it exists), growing political anger, far left activists causing problems, and people afraid to say for whom they are REALLY going to vote, it is difficult to gauge anything much less predict it with accuracy.
As I mentioned on Tuesday, we could have a chance in Arizona as of now, Senator Jeff Flake still plans to retire at the end of this term.  Arizona is a funny place much like New Mexico in that the Democrats are making inroads but for some unknown reason, the people residing there, love hanging onto their Republican senators.
I mean, look at John McCain, that guy has been going downhill for a long time and every time a conservative politician attempts to boot him out, McCain moves to the middle, people vote for him again even though he NEVER keeps a campaign promise, and there you go.
Still, one never knows so I guess we can only hope.   In Mississippi, Roger Wicker is up for reelection and that man is going to win hands down unless some far-right lunatic seeks to primary him and wear him down, he should easily win reelection.  However, one never knows if Steve Bannon will go out and find another Judge Roy Moore to primary the guy thereby allowing us to bring another victory to an ‘acceptable Democrat.’
We cannot forget that the Democrats once controlled the South although some say under malevolent circumstances, but I believe if we back off the Climate Change issue and the LGBTQ and transsexual rights such as using whatever bathroom they choose, we could win a place like Mississippi.
In Nebraska, Deb Fischer should easily win reelection as she is way up but in Nevada, we have a good chance to unseat Dean Heller.  That race should be an easy pickup for the Democrat Party and I would pound away at him.  Nevada is a state that should be in the Democrat camp, period.
In Tennessee, Bob Corker is retiring, which should be good for us but numbers for Republicans there are sky high and I am sure they will come up with someone far better to run for his seat.  I understand that Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn is going to run for the Corker seat and I imagine that she will easily win that race as everyone seems to love the tough old gal.
In Texas, Ted Cruz will win reelection although we might be able to run someone strong against him and give him a run for his money while in Utah, Orrin Hatch is running again, at least as we speak, and he should win his race without a problem.  People love the man just as they love John Barrasso in Wyoming.
In conclusion, things do not look all that good for our party in 2018 but in 2020, if we continue hammering away at the illegitimacy of the Donald Trump presidency and other evidence comes to light, we should be able to make him a one-term president unless we do something stupid and run Kirsten Gillibrand or Elizabeth Warren against him.
No, we need someone such as Joe Biden, the former Vice President would have a HUGE chance at taking down Donald Trump and relegating him to the laundry chute of history.  See you tomorrow.
