TWO HUNDRED-AND-NINETY-FIVE DAYS AFTER ELECTION DAY
We as a nation moved past racism so what
is wrong now?
Honolulu, HI, 08-30-2017
Wednesday: Poor
Lalo, he is back at the hotel lying prostrate in bed because neither he nor me
or his family members realized that it was going to be 108 degrees here in
Bakersfield. Back home in the Islands,
if the temperature climbs to 90 or over it for a few days and the trade winds stop blowing, people feel like they are
going to die so coming to a place where it is over 100 degrees for days on end,
Lord, it is a horrible hardship.
Still, we look forward to
going to the casinos this weekend and then on to Yosemite for several days
because if we are going to come to this part of California, we are going to do
our best to enjoy it but will do our best to avoid the overpowering heat of the
day.
As a woman who has been
around far longer than I care to admit, I have seen things and lived them that
many younger folks simply do not understand.
The constant drumbeat that EVERYONE who is white or a Republican or both
is a ‘racist’ does not serve any purpose other than to turn Americans against
one another.
In the Islands, white
folks are a minority but we all share the same Aloha spirit, which means we do
our best to live with one
another.
You see, one of the
things we all do is to intermarry among one another’s uniquely diverse cultures
so when we get together for a family function and sit out on the lanai, it
resembles a United Nations of sort. Moreover, it is good for the variety of foods
we get to eat!
There is a latent racism
here against mainland haeoles who come here to work who think they are the
‘bomb’ and lord it over us as though we are illiterate natives. We of course must set them straight and once
we do, they typically blend in with the local color and all is well.
Coming to the mainland,
however, for local people such as my family and I is an introduction to a
diverse style of living, one in which, racism does exist and is on
display.
Our offices are out in
Oildale, a part of Bakersfield the local folks here call ‘north of the river,’
a place where the Dust Bowl refugees came to and settled and where their
descendants still live.
The place is on the
decline, a forgotten part of the area’s past where the longtime residents find
themselves in battle with illegal aliens seeking to push them out of their
homes.
North of the river, one
finds displays of the Confederate flag, which to me does not have the same onus
attached to it as it does for black Americans.
Furthermore, it is
understandable that blacks would love to see the flag disappear but until we
can begin educating those in need of education, displays of it will still
appear, much to the chagrin of the more educated community members.
One of the amazing things
Lalo and I saw was the Confederate portion of the area’s oldest cemetery, Union
Cemetery, on the east side of the town.
There, headstones and markers denote the local folks who gave their lives
for a lost cause. To tear down any of
the displays does not seem right nor is it something I believe should happen.
When it comes to
Confederate statues and their place in history, we should not destroy them, no,
we should relocate them to museums.
You see, if we as a
culture cannot expunge the records set by sports stars such as O. J. Simpson,
Pete Rose, and Aaron Hernandez, then so should we not place names, statues, and
other remembrances of our shared past.
If we do remove these
things from view, then we as a people will consign ourselves to relive the
madness over and over so I hope we can find the willpower to acknowledge past
sins such as the United States annexing the Hawaiian Kingdom just as we can
those who fought and many times died fighting for the wrong side in the Civil War.
Just a thought, folks.
Aloha, see you all
tomorrow—if I survive the heat!

Thanks to the archives of Randy
Bachman, the
Guess Who
released a glorious, 2-CD effort of gems from the deep dark past, entitled, “Let’s Go” (April 18, 2004). Contained here are tracks that emanate from
old 1960s’ televised music shows as well as from a collector’s album few can
find, “Wild
Pair.” People forget
that the Guess
Who—in one form or
another—were active since the early 1960s, being around the same time as the
forerunners of rock music in the world such as the Beatles
and the Beach Boys
were. We hope you will check out this
‘blast from the past’ by using the link we provide you here. Once you do, you can go to Amazon.com
and pick the album up in the format, the condition, and the price that works
best for you—you will be so glad you did.
