MEMORIAL DAY 2017

TWO HUNDRED-AND-TWO DAYS AFTER ELECTION DAY

Here in Hawaii, Memorial Day is a very important ‘holiday’ as we remember the attack on Pearl Harbor and all those lost in it
Kula, HI, 05-29-2017 Monday:  Aloha, welcome to the Memorial Day Edition of the American Institute of Culinary Politics-Elemental News of the Day 2017.  This day is one of remembrance of all American servicemen-and-women who have paid the ultimate price in the defense of our great nation.
The Hawaiian Islands have a long, close association with the United States military and we love our military personnel, no doubt about it, and many who come to the Islands to serve generally return here once their tours end and start families or bring existing ones here.
What happened on December 07, 1941, was something for which, the United States was not prepared; however, we were the opening phase of World War II for our nation anyway although the war had been going on for much longer.
At the time, everything appeared very dark, Battleship Row was aflame and numerous people dead, both military and civilian.  The pride of the U.S. Pacific Fleet lay on the bottom or struggled to remain afloat and numerous aircraft—some 180 of them or so—lay aflame or were shot up on the ground.
Prior to the attack, the federal government and the U.S. military made some truly stupid mistakes such a believing in the invincibility of the armed forces and that the Japanese would follow the rules of war such as declaring a ‘state of war’ with the United States prior to launching an attack.
Many historians over the years have questioned some of the things that took place around the tragic date of December 07, 1941 such as WHY the two radar operators at Opana when they reported that there was a massive blip on their screens went ignored.  It was as if the government wanted some sort of event to happen so it could then enter World War II.
Apparently, the FBI also was aware that something was ‘up’ because tapped phones reported to them that the Japanese Consulate was in the process of burning ALL documents, something that blared loudly to intelligence officials that something was coming and coming soon.
As with the debacle of September 11, 2001, there was no cohesion or synchronization between various federal and military intelligence services so what one knew might be known by another and so convincing evidence went ignored.  Had we had National Director of Intelligence, we might have been able to digest ALL the evidence pouring in that the Japanese were going to hit the Islands and hit them SOON.
Imagine, early in the morning on December 07, 1941, U.S. Navy personnel reported sightings of a submarine periscope outside the entrance to Pearl Harbor, more than two-plus hours before the attack.
A minesweeper, the USS Condor reported seeing the periscope to the USS Ward, a destroyer patrolling around the entrance went on alert and spent a considerable amount of time searching for it.
At first, the Ward did not discover the submarine and so the crew went back to standard procedure; however, a sharp-eyed sailor saw the conning tower in the near distance amid the darkness and the ship went back on alert once again and lit up the sub with a salvo from her #1 and #3 guns.
The Japanese midget submarine suffered a direct hit and as it began to sink, the Ward ran a depth charge run on it, lighting it up with four explosive canisters.
By now, reports had flown to Naval Intelligence alerting them to the presence of enemy submarines but efforts by the skeleton crew running the center on a sleepy Sunday morning had trouble reaching the top brass who had the power to do something about the alerts.
As with September 11, 2001, important intelligence seemingly went unviewed and so when Mitsuo Fuchida—commander of the air armada tasked with hitting Pearl Harbor and its environs—left the flight deck of his aircraft carrier with his subordinates closely behind him, he had an open route ahead of him and a slowly awakening enemy ahead.
At 7:49 A.M., the Japanese warplanes flew in over the harbor and began attacking their assigned ships.  All was bedlam and pandemonium as geysers of water penetrated the sky as the armor-piercing, high-explosive bombs hit on or near their intended targets.
Japanese torpedo bombers hit the battleship, USS Oklahoma, which suffered direct hits and begin rolling over until its conning tower mired itself in the mud below it.
The USS California took several direct torpedo hits but her crew raced to their antiaircraft guns and began firing back at the attacking warplanes.
The USS West Virginia took numerous hits and commenced sinking in the water, her superstructure ablaze while the USS Nevada put up a brave fight, its bow damaged by torpedo hits but still her skipper ordered her underway while her AA guns put up a storm of lead that took two Japanese warplanes out of the sky.
The Japanese showed no mercy whatsoever and continued pummeling the stricken battleships, even as their crewmembers clambered to the top or the sides to avoid falling into the chilly waters of the Pacific now ablaze with oil patches.
The ships that could still fight did their best but the cloud of attacking aircraft above them forced most of them to go silent as repeated torpedo and armor-piercing bombs blew them open or sent them to the bottom.
The most violent of all was the explosion that tore the USS Arizona apart, especially a direct hit on the magazine of one of the main turrets.  In exploding, the ship had no time even to roll over and expose its bottom and so took 1,000 of its crew to the depths of the harbor, many of them still interned there to this day.
Japanese warplanes hit the U.S. Army’s Schofield Barracks while others devastated Hickam Field killing numerous personnel in the mess hall and destroying planes on the ground.  Still, pilots that could race to planes so far unstruck by the hail of bombs and the machine gun bullets did their best to get airborne and to fight back.
Commander Fuchida expressed later in after-action reports that the rapid response of the American military personnel took his breath away, that had it been the reverse and it was the enemy attacking Japanese naval targets, their response might have been slower.
By the time, the attackers flew away and the scene returned to some semblance of calmness, the Americans had lost 2,403 dead and 1,178 wounded.  The Japanese destroyed 188 U.S. warplanes and devastated another 159 aircraft.  Of the ships moored in the harbor at the time, the Japanese had sent to the bottom or seriously damaged at least 18 of them.
American forces managed to shoot down 29 Japanese warplanes along with their crews as well as destroyed five midget submarines and one large sub along with their crews.  They also managed to bag some prisoners such as a pilot who managed to crash land on Niihau and avoid capture for several days.
As the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they also simultaneously or were in the process of launching assaults on Malaya, Thailand, the Philippines, Wake Island, Guam, Hong Kong and eventually Singapore.  Eventually, they would spread through Burma to the gates of India as well as to Dutch Indonesia and would threaten northern Australia.
Pearl Harbor is very personal for the people living here in Hawaii and unlike many parts of the mainland where effective education eludes many American youth we certainly value our history and the U.S. military.
Moreover, I would hope that people will remember the significance of this day and will remember all veterans as well as though who have died in the service of our country.  This is something seemingly not as important now thanks to constant leftwing attacks on all our sacred institutions such as the fighting forces of the United States.
How sad.  I will see you here again tomorrow but for now let us celebrate Memorial Day and all that it signifies.  Thank you, American servicemen-and-women, for your sacrifices and your suffering as without you, who knows where we would be.
Aloha and God bless.
