SPRING SESSION 2017

BLOGPOST #2,402 AT THE AICP-END

TWO HUNDRED-AND-THREE DAYS AFTER ELECTION DAY

Hawaii is at a crossroads, one that if we take the correct path might restore us to the state of old, and not the liberal mess it now is…
Kula, HI, 05-30-2017 Tuesday:  Aloha, welcome to the American Institute of Culinary Politics-Elemental News of the Day, Hawaii edition.  Being a Republican here in the Islands can be lonely at times because so many of my fellow Hawaiian citizens all reside in the Democrat camp.  Why, I am not sure, well, I am, I guess, because many of them enjoy living in the welfare culture, which is going as strong as ever here in my home state.
Our tax rates here in Hawaii are around 8.25-percent, which is relatively high but not as bad as, say some of the other states.  The rub, however, is that wages typically are like west coast states although our cost of living is so much higher.  The reason why is that so many homes are multigenerational, as the kids cannot live apart nor can the grandparents.
Obviously, this is not good for the locals but people coming from the mainland easily find all sorts of housing open to them through our constant building and establishing new communities.  The charm of living here now is in the rearview mirror as is the sugar cane and growing ever dimmer.  Maybe it is time to retire on the mainland—only time will tell.
Here in Hawaii, the people voted overwhelmingly for Senator Bernie Sanders when he went toe-to-toe with Hillary Clinton, and then when she won the primary, I think more than 62-percent of the Islands cast a vote for her while the remainder went to Donald Trump.
President Trump is not popular here, which should be no surprise; however, we do have a rising political star here in the Islands—Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa—who has said he plans to seek the lieutenant governor’s post in the 2018 Elections.
In many ways, Maui is a bit more conservative than the folks on Oahu are, and Mayor Arakawa has a long history of being in politics here, first becoming mayor in 2002, and serving through 2006 and then returning to mayoral politics in 2011 and winning yet another term in 2014.
I think we might begin flipping Hawaii slowly from blue to red if the policies of President Donald Trump begin to bear fruit because people want an opportunity to better their lives and not depend upon government to support them.
One of the problems we have here is the lack of opportunities except for a select few as so many people arrive here from the mainland and from around the world to take upper management positions in everything from state government to food service mega hotels.
Many of our students leave the Islands and go to school on the mainland in various universities and colleges and then from there take positions somewhere within its ample spaces and not back here where they belong.
In the meantime, the mainland continues ‘deporting’ or encouraging their homeless to abandon wherever they reside, many times providing them with one-way tickets so they can come here and infest our beaches, the mountains, and anywhere else they can find space to lay their heads.
In many parts of the islands we have city and town laws we call ‘sit-lie laws,’ that forbid the lying or sitting on sidewalks, which not only is unsightly for tourists and locals but also flat-out dangerous as homeless people block egress and ingress to all sorts of businesses.
Still, city administrators and state officials—all Democrats, of course—always find ways to slow or retard progress in these areas, citing all sorts of erroneous concerns, worries, and of course, expressing their empathy towards these ‘poor people.’
We have ‘urban outdoorsmen-and-women’ everywhere, ‘campers’ who infest parks and backroads as they attempt to find sites they can inhabit or lurk with immunity.
Our crime rates continue to increase as do arrests for all sorts of negative societal crimes such as drug use, drug possession, residential burglaries, business robberies, and of course rapes and homicides.
To bring any of these specific issues up to county, city, or state officials is to risk being labeled a ‘hater,’ a ‘bigot,’ or a ‘racist’ and to experience some form of ‘shunning’ from one’s fellows, which is why few if any are brave enough to speak out.  I mean, my husband and I own a beautiful restaurant and if the community stops coming, we will go out of business.
Back to the problems with the homeless, there are parts of every island and every existing city in which, the homeless predominate and cause havoc.  In Iwelei, we recently had a stabbing and a meth lab blew up, something that 20 years ago, would have shocked Hawaiians whereas now, it is the price of ‘economic advancement’ but for whom?
Women here now fear driving certain roads at night alone as the homeless and the transients lurk among the shadows.  If one’s car were to break down and the female driver stranded, there is always fear that something bad could happen, which is not something any female living in the Islands had to worry about back in the early 2000s.
I contend that if we begin cultivating a new breed of conservative Republican politicians, we might be able to regain some of the lost ground that began nearly two decades ago first with President George W. Bush and then with President Barack Obama.
If we are going to maintain our culture in the way Hawaiians 50 and older remember, we are going to have to begin pushing out the liberal politicians that have become akin to the spread of cancer throughout one’s body.  None of us asked for this so why should we permit our politicians, whether Governor David Ige to the lowliest local Democrat politician.
That is going to conclude things for today, my friends, and we will return tomorrow for yet another wonderful day high up on the slopes of Haleakala.  I imagine we will dispense with discussing local issues and move on to the pressing national and international political stories of the day.
Let’s remain positive and hope that our president can accomplish his goals as the Democrats have never been more on the ropes than they now are--lovely!  Oh, today marks my 90th post at the blog, an accomplishment of which, I am very proud.  Very ono!

Once again, folks with access to the Beatles’ archives released another ‘blast from the past,’ the remastered “The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl,” on September 09, 2016.  It is a wonder any of these tapes are still around but as we know, people tuck them away for release at a time distant in the future.  The band blasts through their early tunes all the while the fans go bonkers over the band, which is why this release is a must-have in our eyes.  If you were not there—and most of us were not—you have no idea just how unique a time it was in the history of music and of the world.  We hope you will use the link we provide you here so you can pick it up at Amazon.com.  This is a ‘must-have’ for every serious fan of the band and of the era so quit wasting time, use the link, and pick it up in the format, the condition, and the price that works best for you—you will be so glad you did.
