SPRING SESSION 2017

BLOGPOST #2,375 AT THE AICP-END

ONE HUNDRED-AND-SEVENTY-SIX DAYS AFTER ELECTION DAY

Living in paradise means living without the crime that plagues the mainland
Kihei, HI, 05-03-2017 Wednesday: Here in Hawaii, we have strong laws regarding guns, which are good, we have the lowest number of shootings as any of the states on the mainland where gun ownership and lack of gun control or lax enforcement leads to massive numbers.  Chances of suffering a violent crime here in the islands is as low as when compared to the mainland that we do indeed live in paradise.
The safest places to live in our state is on Kauai, Molokai, or on the Big Island of Hawaii whereas the more populated areas such as on Maui or on Oahu, typically see more crime.  Incidences of violent crime are extremely low, especially from guns as we have laws that allow hunters to hunt but the carrying and use of handguns is something we do our best to prohibit.
We do allow handgun ownership but we have a strict process that one must undergo so we can protect the entire state from the sorts of violence we see on the mainland.  Just this week already, we saw some lolo shooting up people down in San Diego and also in Houston, I believe, where someone lured in paramedics and then shot them.
Now who in their right mind would call paramedics and tell them that someone was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and then light up the rescuers?  That is crazy and thankfully, we do not see events such as these mimicked here in Hawaii.
If one goes to ag.hawaii.gov/cpja/crime-in-hawaii-2015/, one can see the statistics for violent crimes committed throughout the state.  For instance, we had a total of 2,992 murders, robberies, and aggravated assaults and of those, 10.5-percent were gun crimes.  The rest of them used other means with the majority of them being committed with strong-arm weapons such as fists, hands, and feet.
Twenty-five-percent of the crimes used ‘other’ or ‘unknown’ weapons, which I would assume to be anything from chains to 2 x 4’s, or clubs whereas 17.3-percent the assailants conducted using knives or other sharp objects.
What I am saying is that here in the islands where we have a strong sense of community, the incidences of violent crime is very low compared with cities in the lower 48 such as Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Cleveland, or New York.  We have a system that works here, one that would be wise for the leaders of said cities to emulate.
In 2015, we had only 29 murders and none of our police officers died in the line of duty although according to the statistics, 401 law enforcement officers suffered from some sort of violent assault.  Still, I think if we lined our stats up with any of the aforementioned cities on the mainland, we would be little more than a blip on their radars.
One of the things we do seem to suffer from is automobile thefts, numbers that are extremely high when lined up against a population for the entire state of about 1.5 million people.
Cars disappear quite often, mostly never to be seen again and one who does not live here has to ponder, ‘where do they go on an island?’  Well, we do have large ships come to the ports of Oahu, Maui, and to a lesser extent Kauai and it is onto these vessels that the cars go all under the cover of darkness or with a nod and a wink.
From there, there it is no telling where they go; however, I think using common sense, we can expect them to head west to Asia or east to South America.  Heck, for all we know, Donald Trump’s good buddies, the Russians, might be on the receiving end of hot cars, trucks, and even boats.
Insurance rates are fairly high here thanks to the weather conditions such as the omnipresent salt air as well as the condition of many of the roads and the once overly present drunken driving problems.
However, with our 2011 law in which, law enforcement installed so-called ‘interlock’ technology onto first-time offenders vehicles, which prevents them from operating their vehicles when intoxicated, we are on a path to eliminate this scourge.
We also use mobile checkpoints out on well-traveled highways to cut down on the few remaining drunken drivers who manage to skirt the restrictions by borrowing vehicles or even stealing them.  Granted, the numbers that fall into the dragnet have declined but there are always a few brave souls out there who believe they can get around the laws.
Generally, it is the visitors and those who move to the islands from elsewhere who experience a transition from the ways in which, they live or lived on the mainland to the community-oriented lifestyles we cherish here.  People bring their cars and attempt to do the same things they did elsewhere and this can drive up the drunken driving arrests.
As time passes and they continue assimilating to our slower-paced way of life, they give up many of the destructive tendencies they once felt compelled to do, which is great because we want everyone to feel welcome here as well as safe.
We do have issues with folks who enjoy toking the pakalolo but even there the mobile checkpoints operated by law enforcement helps cut down the irresponsible who think they can smoke the ganja and then get behind the wheel.
All in all, we do a good job keeping the evils of the mainland on the mainland and away from here, which is why people come here year-round to surf our magnificent oceans, to hike in the mountains or through Haleakala out through the Kaupo Gap and onto Hana, and snorkel out around Molokini and other awesome diving spots.
We hope you will come and join us, as we would love having you visit.  Thank you and God bless, my friends, we will return tomorrow for another day and oh, please visit me over at our secondary blog so we can have a glorious time viewing the works of Beverly Carrick.
Aloha.
