WINTER SESSION 2016

BLOGPOST #2,228 AT THE AICP-END

FORTY-NINE DAYS AFTER ELECTION DAY

NEW YEAR’S EVE WEEK EDITION 2016

MISCELLANEOUS ARTICLES INDEX, PART XLII

The Oakland Raiders were well on the way—that is before the Colts broke our quarterback’s leg
Valencia, CA, 12-27-2016 Tuesday: Here it is, getting close to the end of the year and I have to say, I am flummoxed folks and have damned good reason to be.  I am upset because I thought the Oakland Raiders were well on the way to going deep into the playoffs but oh, no, the damned Indianapolis Colts broke the leg of our quarterback.  I broke down in tears on Saturday—great, heaving sobs, in fact—as I thought we were going to do battle with the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game and that we would knock the crap out of them and make it into Super Bowl LI.
We had it made on Saturday, we were cruising to a major victory, our first winning season since making it to the Super Bowl back in 2002.  For the past 14 years, we have lived in football wasteland what with the Denver Broncos, Kanas City Chiefs, and even the damned San Diego Chargers doing better than MY team almost every year.
Derek Carr has been the sparkplug that has lit the offense on fire and with acquisitions from the rival San Francisco 49ers and elsewhere, we have made one of the greatest comebacks in sports history by being at the top of the division and with a winning record, which NO one can dispute or deny.
Coach Jack Del Rio has been instrumental in the gathering together of some of the finest players currently playing in the NFL.  He has imbued in them the fact that yes, YOU can win, all you need to do is to repeat the mantra of the team, “Commitment to Excellence,” and you, too, can be a winner, you can right the wrongs of the past by winning NOW.
I believe Derek Carr has the potential to sit among the Valhalla of NFL greats, drinking mead every single night, but it sure does appear that the Lord is going to make him work long and hard for it, not give it to him on a silver platter.
You know, it almost seemed too easy, the Raiders were steaming along smoking hot when suddenly, towards the end of Saturday’s game against the Colts, Colts’ linebacker Trent Cole managed to break the fibula of our star quarterback.
Carr had already suffered an injury to one of his fingers on his throwing hand (the pinky, I believe) earlier in the season but managed to overcome the pain for the good of the team and continue driving them towards the greatness the team now believes is theirs.
The breaking of his fibula, however, is an injury from which, he may not overcome but given his indomitable will, I am sure he can and will return next year.  He is, after all, a young man imbued with a gift, sports ability given him by God, so if he labors long and hard, he should be back in the saddle next season.
In the meantime, we have backup quarterback Matthew McGloin. Some say, “McGloin has no chance to keep the Raiders in the game” to which, I say, “He has a week to prepare for the final game of the season, the one in Denver against a disintegrating Broncos team.
Now, we do not expect the flipping Broncos are going to roll over and bark like a dog because Kansas City punked them on Christmas evening in the Sunday Night Football game.  The reigning Super Bowl champions have to be angry that they suck this season and will want to go out with a BANG seeing as how they lack the ability to make it into the playoffs—even if they win.
Even though Kansas City scored enough points to keep the Broncos down, they did not score an insurmountable amount of them thanks to their ‘rookie’ quarterback—it is not as though they have Peyton Manning in the pocket anymore.  Still, we have to expect that the defense will rise to the occasion and attempt to destroy our team, running with a backup quarterback.
If Kansas City wins by beating the hapless Chargers next Sunday—a team that gave the Cleveland Browns its first win, they could claim the division, especially if Oakland goes down to defeat.  People are already signing the death knell of the team, saying that without Carr, there is NO way the Raiders can win.
While that might be true, it is NOT necessarily true.  I heard a rumor that the Raiders are going to make a trade with Dallas for Tony Romo who has been sitting on the bench all year since his latest injury knocked him out.
Added to that the success that his fellow quarterback, Dak Prescott, is having, Romo has become little more than a backup, a benchwarmer, and a spectator to a kid doing what he once did.
Let us say Romo arrives in Oakland tomorrow and undergoes a crash course in ‘Raiderism,’ and that he is ready to go against the Broncos and actually wins the game.
Let us imagine, too, an interesting scenario—what if a Romo-led Raiders team makes it all the way to Super Bowl LI?—and let us say the Dallas Cowboys make it to the NFC berth.  Can YOU imagine the game?
Let us say that Tony Romo accomplishes the ONE THING he has been unable to do with Dallas and get into a super bowl.  Let us say that instead of leading the Cowboys, he leads the Raiders and they somehow find a way to win the game-yikes!  Good golly, Miss Molly, that would be one for the history books, for the ages, for all eternity!  I shudder to imagine.
I doubt it is going to happen because I do not believe Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would do such a stupid thing as giving Tony Romo to another team.  Alas, the days of having famed quarterbacks around such as Bernie Kosar, Jim Plunkett, and other illustrious names to trot out for an attempt to grab some final glory is long since passed us.  I guess we have Matthew McGloin to pin our hopes on and I hope he can find the wherewithal deep down within him to keep the hopes of the Raider Nation alive.
What say you?  Perhaps, Rich Gannon is still around, the losing quarterback of Super Bowl XXXVII, played against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who beat us by a score of 48-21.
You know, I still believe we got the short end of the stick in that game as our former coach, Jon Gruden, went to the Bucs and gave them all of our plays, which cost us the game.  Son-of-a-bitch, we want payback NOW.  The only way we can obtain it is by going to the super bowl and winning the doggone thing!
Thanks for spending a few moments with me; we will meet again tomorrow as long as the Lord chooses to keep me in the game.  See you at BOTH blogs tomorrow.

George Harrison released his next solo album on December 20, 1974, the FINAL release by any of the Beatles for the year.  “Dark Horse” ranks among his best works at least to us here at the blog.  Music critics of the time slammed the album because they kept seeking things that they sought rather than accepting what Harrison gave them.  “Dark Horse” and “Ding Dong, Ding Dong,” were two major hits on the radio that helped drive up sales.  George also was suffering from the fact that his first wife, Pattie, ran off with best friend, Eric Clapton.  Added to that emotional turmoil, a subsequent tour did not fare very well as rehearsals did not progress as they should have and George suffered some issues with his throat making it difficult for him to sing.  We LOVE the album, however, as it came along at a time when those of us alive in the day needed it, which is why we hope you will use the link we provide you here so you can go to Amazon.com and pick it up there.
