CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT?


It was an election for the ages…
Mukilteo, WA, 11-09-2016 Wednesday:  Last night was one for the books, folks, and a night that went far longer than the election four years earlier did.  I think early on in the evening, people were beginning to exhibit some shock as everything went somewhat topsy-turvy.  When Trump hit 254 electoral votes against 215 for Hillary, Karl Rove—forever the big promoter of all things ‘Bush’—began to lose it on the Fox News Channel. 
It hung on the above number for a lengthy period of time and it was fascinating—at least for me—to watch the FOX News folks attempting to find ways by which, Hillary could win the presidency.  For the last month, every channel was attempting to find ways by which, Trump could win the presidency, and it all came down to Hillary running the table.   
Now that we have congratulated the winner of the election-whoever it might be, we have to consider what we can do to make America work again.  People such as me, a longtime moderate Republican who can go either way depending upon the candidate most likely will now remain within the Republican camp if they can ‘get their act together’ and become a true party once again and not just one side of a two-sided coin. 
Nonetheless, I made sure I allowed all of my employees to go out and vote yesterday, as we did not open the restaurant until it was time for dinner.  I instructed my workers to take their wives or husbands and anyone else whom they knew to the polls with them as long as they were registered voters.  It is important that people begin having some ‘skin in the game’ instead of sitting along the sidelines and then bitching at whoever is in power and who is not. 
I turned 80 years old in July, which should tell you that I have been around for a long number of years and elections.  The first time I voted in an election was back in 1958 after I hit the age 21 and since that time, I have never missed a single opportunity to vote. 
However, as a young man, I typically voted for Democrats in local races and Republicans generally in statewide and national races thinking that it was good to have a somewhat mixed electorate.  Having some pushback against a powerful executive is always a good thing even though my state has been on a downhill slide to liberalism for 30 years now.  
Young people generally begin their voting lives as Democrats unless they come from a strong family with Republican traditions because when one begins life as I did, one has very little and it is all about the working class (we did have a ‘working class’ back then) and the Democrats were the traditional ‘party of the people.’  Somehow, the Dems have gone down a different path and it is has been difficult looking back to see just where the schism occurred but I think I see its starting point. 
Many blame four-term president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as the first ‘socialist president.’  He entered office at a time when the trepidations caused by the Great Depression and the failure of GOP President Herbert Hoover to address them helped FDR win his first election with ease in 1932.  I remember my parents being quite happy because they felt they had a true ‘man of the people’ representing them in the halls of power. 
He did many great things for the nation but it became clear that he was going to head down a far left path until the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, caused him to veer in a different direction.  Thanks to the attack that killed a God-awful number of Americans, FDR had to become the savior of the world through helping our allies beat back not only the Japanese menace but also the Nazis, the Fascists in Italy, and their lesser allies. 
After President Roosevelt died, his vice president, the honorable Harry S. Truman, a Midwest man of wisdom and conservative values assumed the office, brought the United States through the rest of World War II, and then took us through the Korean Conflict.  He seemed to be a man of solid moral character and worked to help the United States begin the difficult process of becoming an integrated nation. 
John F. Kennedy was the next Democrat in the White House as he followed the victorious World War II general and Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  In today’s world, Kennedy would be a Blue Dog Democrat at worst and a conservative Republican at best, which tells you something about the direction in which, our nation has been going ever since. 
The assassination of President Kennedy brought his vice president, Lyndon Baines Johnson, into office and although the man most likely was of the same character as outgoing Nevada Senator Harry Reid is now.  LBJ still was a man who appeared to love his country and no one ever doubted his patriotism even though he mired us in an unwinnable Vietnam War. 
We know that Richard M. Nixon followed Johnson and we know what happened to him with Watergate.  The humorous thing about his number one scandal is that compared with the things we know Hillary Clinton has done, what Nixon did was nothing much to lose sleep over, it was nothing.  Yet, his party’s leaders went to him, told him he had to step down and step down, he did, which brought Gerald R. Ford to power. 
Ford was a good man but we knew he would lose to relative unknown Georgia Governor and Democrat Jimmy Carter.  For whatever reason, President Carter had a difficult time; he lacked the ability to handle the crises and problems the office brought him.  Being unable to end the Iranian Hostage Crisis proved his undoing and California Governor Ronald Wilson Reagan won in a massive landslide. 
He had eight good years although the Democrats sought to destroy them in any way they could because they did not like the success he brought the country through full employment, good-paying jobs, lower taxes, and a spirit of hope for the first time since Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated John F. Kennedy as he motored through Dallas. 
His vice president followed him but George H.W. Bush was not one of those forceful men who can galvanize a nation although he took us to war in several places and won convincing victories.  The big one was the affair to drive Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait in Desert Storm but his lack of spunk to fight for reelection brought us William Jefferson Clinton. 
Bill and Hillary entered the White House in 1993 and it was similar to a tandem presidency in which, both partners participated.  Clinton was somewhat of a moderate in many ways although his wife, the first lady, was much harder left than he was.  In 1994, Bill Clinton had no choice but to work with the Republicans because for the first time in 40 years, the GOP took over the House of Representatives in a massive mid-term victory. 
The election of 2000 was where the problems began for the nation.  When Vice President Al Gore sought to follow on the coattails of his boss, President Clinton, he found himself mired in one of the worst elections in modern history in which, he won the popular vote but his contender, Governor George W. Bush of Texas, won the Electoral College.  This led to a very contentious recount in Florida that went into December until the Supreme Court of the United States shut down the never-ending recount. 
I believe the Democrats lost their minds when the Supreme Court halted any further recount and it was from that point forward, the Dems were going to do EVERYTHING in their power to nullify the Bush #43 presidency in any possible way they could.  It quickly became extremely ugly as the Democrats in the House and Senate sought to stymie everything President George W. Bush proposed or sought to do. 
Things obviously changed when al-Qaida attacked the World Trade Center and took the Twin Towers down by crashing jetliners into them as well as into the Pentagon and into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  For a brief period as America geared up for war, the Democrats went somewhat silent until Bush sent troops into Iraq in 2003 ostensibly to remove WMDs from Saddam Hussein. 
Note, most of the Democrats were onboard including Hillary Clinton who was a U.S. senator but when they failed to uncover any signs of WMDs stashed around the country, the Dems went on a tizzy as they attacked Bush from all sides.  Bush—as well as everyone within his administration—failed to fight back, which caused much anguish on the Republican side.  It also set in motion, the Bush Derangement Syndrome in which, somewhat normal Democrats suddenly became Loony Tunes nuts.  It was horrible.
Senator John F. Kerry sought to unseat Bush in 2004 but somehow, Bush managed to hold on.  However, when he was going to leave office in 2008, Senator John McCain managed to win the nomination for the GOP but could not compete against Democratic nominee, Barack Obama.  Obama smoked the Arizona senator and then smoked Mitt Romney in 2012 to win a second term. 
The amazing thing about Barack Obama is that despite him being the architect of most of the bad things we see happening in the country in 2016, for some astonishing and unknown reason, his fingerprints are nowhere on any of the disasters the 44th president of the Unites States caused.  Astute political observers express shock how Obama can continue to maintain a high favorable approval rating while he manages to sidestep connection to the national health care law bearing his name.  How the heck can that be?  No one has a clue. 
The 2016 Election has been about change.  People are smart enough to know that things are not going right and that this is NOT the way Americans are used to living.  Yes, we have had vicissitudes but nothing compared to the mess in which, we now find ourselves. 
Things are not right and the people I know want change, change for the good, and not the disaster we find ourselves living with.  With the GOP maintaining control of the House as well as the Senate, things are indeed looking much better.  The question is who will be our NEXT president, Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton?  It all depends upon a number of states that do things in peculiar ways.  I guess I will wait until Thursday to see if I know anything different.
