FALL SESSION 2016

BLOGPOST #2,146 AT THE AICP-END

Today, we begin the discussion of the vice presidential candidate debate on Tuesday night
Taft, CA, 10-06-2016 Thursday: One thing about running a restaurant or a chain of restaurants is that one employs people from all sides of the political spectrum.  We have some Republicans and we have plenty of Democrats.  We also have some Libertarians, independents, and some who will not state which side of the grand political divide they inhabit.
However, when conversations erupt as they usually do—since we encourage our employees to listen to talk radio throughout their shifts and a television during events such as presidential debates—we hear a variety of opinions.  This is important for an owner-operator such as me because it is important to gauge the feelings and sentiments held by my workers.
This was something that we needed to know, back during the heated days of the Obamacare debate in 2009, because we needed to know what our workers thought and what they would expect Rom and I to do for them.
After all, EVERYONE loves free stuff, especially if their employer is going to have to provide it to them so when the Obamacare issue came up and the crew began debating its merits, I had to call a meeting to tell them precisely how it would affect not only my husband and I, their employers, but them, as well.
The food servers and the prep-cooks seldom think that anything government stipulates the owner-operator to provide is going to harm people such as Rom and me who struggle to remain out of the red and in the black every month.  Food service establishments are notorious for operating on a tight margin and still, the employees think my family and I are awash in loads of cash.  This simply is NOT true.
My husband and I along with our managers struggle to keep the lights on, the reefers stocked, both the front of the house and the back clean, pest control on time, and supplies flowing in so we can sell them at a low profit margin.  Even non-profit entities such as country clubs typically struggle because the law requires them to continually put the cash back in so as not to show any profit above and beyond what the law stipulates they can earn.
Let’s move onto the debates now between presidential and vice presidential candidates.  Many of the liberal-Democrat employees were jubilant at how Donald Trump ‘lost it’ in the first debate and felt that Hillary was going to bulldoze over him as though he were a squirrel caught in the middle of the road.  Granted, the Donald is not always his own best friend but we must hope that by this Sunday, he will have committed some time and effort to do some rope-a-dope with Hillary and then smack the snot out of her.
The more conservative employees, long-term workers who have accumulated something in life oppose Hillary and winced at the way Trump began losing it in the first debate.  Still, they realize that if Hillary wins the White House, the high tax rates they now pay could double or treble.
You see, Hillary wants to spend so much money that the Internal Revenue Service is going to squeeze whatever cash from the people of this nation that many of them could be standing in bread lines.  Without some sort of ‘Robin Hood’ to come to their aid, those bread lines could become permanent.
Worse, Hillary has this ‘Marie Antoinette-style’ of governance in that she seems to believe that no matter how much she wants to raise taxes, it will never be enough even if the taxpayers can no longer hand over the cash because they simply do not have it.  What will she say as IRS agents hold us upside down shaking the moths out of our pockets—“Let them eat cake?”
At some point, the taxpayers of the nation will be unable to continue ponying up the sums of money the Democrats want along with ever-increasing sums for health care, which seemingly becomes worse by the day.  I mean, health care costs have quadrupled in recent months—can you afford to pay the increase—Roman and I sure as hell can’t!
The vice presidential debate elicited numerous comments the night it took place as well as all day yesterday and to my surprise, many of the Democratic employees were somewhat taken aback at how abrasive Senator Tim Kaine was in his debate with Governor Mike Pence.
Right from the get-go, Kaine came out and set the tone for the night interrupting both the moderator and Governor Pence on numerous occasions.  I will admit that I found myself embarrassed for THEM because Senator Kaine looked like some sort of maniacal hobgoblin with his arched eyebrows and his sinister smile.  Not a handsome man to be sure (reminds me of an old boyfriend—retch!)
Moreover, I heard it said that between Kaine (mostly Kaine) and the moderator, Pence suffered approximately 70-72 interruptions as he tried to speak.  Kaine ran through the litany at how Donald Trump is a ‘racist-sexist-bigot-homophobe-Islamophobe-anti-social scumbag’ on not just one occasion but on several.  If a Republican had sought to trade hateful jabs with a Democratic candidate, I would find myself both chagrined and questioning his or her ability to serve as commander-in-chief or as the vice president.
The moderator—Elaine Quijano, I believe her name was—was better than Lester Holt was, the man who moderated the first debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.  Still, she lacked the necessary wherewithal to hold Kaine accountable for the times when he went off on Donald Trump by throwing out the grocery list of insults, demanding the Pence refute or defend them.
Donald Trump has said numerous things but many times—as Governor Pence so eloquently pointed out--when Kaine kept going on and on about what Trump said about ‘Mexicans’ (illegals) is that he failed to mention the entire quote and only part of it.  Yes, Trump did say that ‘many of the Mexicans crossing the border were murderers and rapists but that there was also many good people among them.’
Of course, when Governor Pence pointed that out, Kaine continued his criticisms, which caused Pence to deflect the fecal matter that the Virginian was spewing out like a lisping volcano, back onto his face.  Pence was a master at getting out the message the best he could because once again, instead of debating just one individual, he also had to contend with the moderator but I must say, Quijano was so much better than Lester Holt.  (Speaking of Lester, it pains me to say that I can no longer watch him on the NBC Nightly News because of his devious ways at aiding Hillary Clinton in the first debate).
Governor Pence withstood barrage after barrage of insults and managed to get in policy points, something that terrifies not only the Democratic ticket but also the liberal establishment as a whole.  The last thing Democrats and their media allies want is an honest and uncontrolled discussion on policy matters.
Oh, sure, Kaine did his best to tie Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin as well as to the loony-tunes crackpot, child dictator of North Korea but I think Pence once again did a marvelous job of deflecting the S**T storm back onto Senator Kaine.  I thought I could see some of it glittering on the senator’s forehead—the place where it belonged.
The amazing thing is that following the debate, the moderators found themselves forced to admit that Governor Pence won it.  Then, the talking points memo came down from on high and suddenly EVERY single pundit, talking head, and media hitman began saying that ‘Pence set himself up for a run in 2020 because he knows Donald Trump is going to lose.’
You see, they could not give him the victory outright, they had to tarnish it some way so the liberal pundits such as Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow (I find that woman scary) could attempt to drive a wedge between Pence and Trump.  While Pence could run in 2020, I doubt that was on his mind because as he said, ‘the winner of the night was Donald Trump because he, Pence, got the presidential nominee’s message out to the world.’
I believe he did and even though Kaine kept on about Trump’s tax returns, Pence pointed out that Mr. Trump used the laws of the land to offset his massive real estate losses 21 years ago.  All I wish that Pence had done when the issue of taxes arose was to look at the cameras and the crowd and ask rhetorically “Who here wants to pay more in taxes?” I sure as F**K do not!
What he did point out is that the Clinton-Kaine ticket wants to raise taxes by two-trillion dollars, something that could very well force me to sell my restaurants in order to survive.  Oh, Kaine and Hillary claim that taxpayers making less than $125,000 per year will not see their taxes increase—playing the class card—only those above that figure.
I mean, did not Barack Obama promise us numerous things, such as how Obamacare and that those of us who make less than that arbitrary amount would not have to worry?  Then lo and behold, we are taking it up the old poop chute sans Vaseline.  Who wants that?—certainly not me!
My employees who watched the debate found themselves questioning some preconceived notions as to who the Democratic and the Republican candidates are.  Sure, there are always the automatons who blindly stand beside their chosen candidate and the ones who think that Hillary and Tim Kaine are their godsends are the ones I feel compelled to help understand the gravity of this election.  We will continue the discussion tomorrow.  Please, join me then.
I love all of you!  See ya!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 06, 2016

The Hollies released another ‘best of’ compilation album this one in 1988, entitled, “The Hollies at Abbey Road 1973-1989.”  Say what you will about this band, during their first decade or so, they cranked out a variety of BIG HITS although it would seem their ‘golden days’ were well behind them now.  This album contains lesser-known music from the band following their heady days, particularly music from when vocalist Allan Clarke returned to the fold.  Therefore, if you want to hear some of the finest rock-and-roll from one of the all-time great original British Invasion bands of the first wave, then this CD is a must-have for all serious music fans.  Ergo, why we say ‘use our link so you can redirect your browser to Amazon.com where you can pick it up in whatever form, condition, and price suits you—we thank you.’
