BLOGPOST #2,002 AT THE AICP-END

Part III of WHY the United States used the BOMB on the Japanese during World War II
Santa Barbara, CA, 05-15-2016 Sunday:  Hello and welcome to the final post of the week for me, and tomorrow, you will pick up with Goldfish.  We have been discussing the expediency to end World War II and the use of the atom bomb as the agent with which, Harry S. Truman—a Democrat—decided to use it.  The United States originally had worked long and hard to develop the nuke because all signs pointed to the fact that Nazi Germany was ahead by at least two years in developing their own nuclear weapons.  No one knew how far along the Germans might be but what they did know is that word trickled out of various Axis-controlled areas that the Germans had research facilities in operation in their quest.
We have to thank Adolf Hitler for his mistakes during the war because he saw the tactical advantages of weaponry but did not grasp the strategic uses because he planned that all his wars would quickly end.  Up until he invaded Russia in the summer of 1941, all of the wars had ended with a rapidity that invented a new word, “blitzkrieg” or “lightning war.”
Had the Fuhrer actually used his mind and listened to his military leaders, it is possible that not only would they have developed and deployed sooner all sorts of weapons and not just the nuke.  They could have had everything from jet- and rocket-powered aircraft to V-1 and V-2 missiles, as well as six-and-eight engine bombers with which, to bomb long and deep into enemy territory, not to mention a strong globe-encircling High Seas Fleet and not just U-boats.
Fortunately, for the Allies, Hitler did not get any of these things until late in the war and some of them, he never did, much to the delight of the coalition of nations battling the Axis.  When the Nazis finally threw in the towel with the death of Hitler and some of his cronies in the bunker in Berlin, there was no more rush to deploy the bomb to use against Germany.
You see, this is one of the ‘truths’ left out of the story as to HOW and WHY the United States dropped one bomb on Hiroshima and a second several days later on Nagasaki.  As we debated the past two days, the Japanese, starving and under constant attack from the air, did not intend to surrender.  They had thousands of Kamikaze aircraft of all types buried deep in mountain caves ready to deploy against any invasion fleet off its shores.
Add to this the fact that it had at least two-million well-rested troops on home soil, not to mentions millions of civilians committed to the defense of the home islands to the end, available to military commanders, too.  The Japanese military machine still had submarines, naval ships, and millions of men more on the mainland of China and throughout much of Southeast Asia and across the Pacific that did not stand down until after the two bombs dropped.  When they did, Emperor Hirohito finally demanded that his military cease the fight and make way for the occupation of Japan.
Ignorant people declare that this was a ‘racist act, that we would never have dropped the bomb on Germany.’  Well, we have gone down this road already and we all know that that simply is not true.  Whoever threw in the towel first and who had the capacity to continue fighting would have been the recipient of the two nukes, Fat Man and Little Boy.
Besides, President Truman did not want to see millions more casualties from not only the United States, Great Britain, Australia-New Zealand, and India as well as some Dutch and French die but also MILLIONS of Japanese.  The fight on Okinawa claimed some 100,000 Japanese troops against a loss of 12,000 Americans, staggering for both sides, so it is not difficult to contend that millions more would have died.  What would be the purpose?
This is with what President Truman struggled—he was not in the loop, only added to the ticket late in 1944 to help FDR win some Midwestern states.  When FDR died suddenly in Hot Springs, Georgia, in 1945, Truman proclaimed he was ‘not ready’ for the job.  However, things transition quickly and those in charge of the Manhattan Project—military and civilian—apprised him there was ‘another way’ with which, to force the Japanese to surrender if they would not listen to reason.
Japan made some overtures through its remaining embassies in Sweden, Switzerland, and in Moscow, asking if the Soviets might intervene on their behalf to end the war with the United States.  They suggested that since they had refrained from aiding the European Axis partners in their invasion of the Soviet Union, the Soviets might not have won the amazing victory they did.  However, “Uncle Joe” Stalin would listen to none of it, he had already committed to moving his massive military forces eastward so he could fulfill his promise to America and Britain to aid them in ending the war in the Pacific.
Other things occurred such as semantic errors, similar to what caused the ‘sneak attack’ on Pearl Harbor.  The Japanese way of saying things was open to interpretation just as was their concept of time and America was no better at understanding what the Japanese were thinking, attempting to say, do, or try and so an opportunity disappeared, one that might have prevented the dropping of the bombs.
What you have to understand is that the Japanese military was a brutal foe and they hit Pearl Harbor, declaring ‘WAR’ after the bombs were falling on our serene ships sitting at rest in the great Hawaiian harbor.
Moreover, they forced thousands of captured American and Filipino troops on the Bataan Death March, a ‘march’ that caused countless deaths as men passed out along the route of march from mistreatment and met their end as human bags for bayonet practice.  The Japanese used prisoners as slave labor, they beheaded those whom they deemed to be ‘threats’ among their prisoners and burned others alive.  There was no love in America for ANYTHING ‘Japan’ and President Truman was well aware of this.
Given the possibility of avoiding millions of casualties and especially at least one-million American troops, Truman gave the nod for the drop of the first bomb on Hiroshima.  When the city disappeared in a massive fireball, the leadership of the nation was stunned but was not clear, as to what had happened.  What was it?  A massive firebombing or something new of which, they had no understanding—they decided to continue the fight.
When given the opportunity to surrender, they refused and three days later, Nagasaki went up in a nuclear cloud.  Emperor Hirohito called his ministers, ordered them to cease the war, surrender, and surrender they did.  The rest is history.
World War II was the most destructive war the planet has ever seen.  Millions died around the globe, fighting in far-flung battles or in slave labor or death camps.  Civilians died more so than military personnel, it was horrendous.  However, the United States rebuilt Japan and Germany as well as committed to defending both nations.  The world has been at peace since the fall of those bombs until a new enemy, gutter trash from the Islamic world appeared to cause us anguish.  However, when we finally mobilize and go to war with the jihadist trash, they will disappear far more quickly than did our Axis foes.
That will do it, friends, the use of the two nuclear weapons provided a swift end to a horrible war.  I will say that using Fat Man and Little Boy kept the world at peace for the next half-century as people had living memory of what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  We have paid our debt to Japan and continue doing so for something that was not racist but necessary, which is WHY if Barack Obama ventures to Hiroshima and apologizes for America’s use of the weapons, then I say,  “SHAME ON HIM—YOU EMBARRASS US.”
See you next time.
Take care,
Jimmy Hall
