A Three-Part History Lesson begins today in which, we learn the REAL Truth as to WHY President Harry S. Truman dropped TWO Nuclear Weapons on Japan at the end of World War II—it was NOT Racism!

SPRING SESSION 2016

BLOGPOST #2,000 AT THE AICP-END

FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH

Part One of WHY the U.S. dropped Two Nuclear Weapons on Japan
Santa Barbara, CA, 05-13-2016 Friday:  President Obama is going to visit Hiroshima later this month, ostensibly to ‘just visit’ but everyone knows, he is going there so he can bow before the Japanese.  He is going to apologize to them just as he has apologized to everyone else around the world for perceived wrongdoings on the part of our country.
This erroneous line of reasoning tends to outrage numerous Americans who believe that the United States is not at fault for what happened during World War II, even though we won the war by ‘out-wreaking havoc’ on our enemies.  At age 70, I am a Baby Boomer, I was born in 1945 and this September, I will hit the ripe old age of 71 so you know I have a great deal of firsthand accounts from numerous members of my family as to what World War II was like.  Add to that the fact that I am a lifelong buff of the wars of the 20th Century but especially of World Wars I, and II.
The Japanese empire went to war in China in the early 1930s over some trumped up ‘outrages’ the Japanese manufactured so they could gobble up land on the mainland.  As the years went by and as Japanese atrocities increased, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt decided that ‘if the Japanese would not listen to reason and leave Nationalist China, then the United States would terminate shipments of scrap metal and petroleum to the island nation, products which it allowed it to wage war.
The Japanese could not maintain their war effort without these very necessary supplies and so began plotting as to how to hammer not only the United States but also other European colonial powers in the region such as the British, the French, and the Dutch.  To replace the lost sources of oil and metal for their war machine, the Japanese government decided that it would have to launch attacks across the Pacific region on a wide front with which, to stun the Europeans holding valuable real estate and exporting its resources back home.
What’s more, launching a war of aggression was necessary in order to secure their supplies so they could wage all-out war as a member of the Axis—Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and lesser, allied states both in Europe such as Finland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, and in Asia such as the Thais and a nationalist movement in India.
Most people over the age of 40 know that Japan hit Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, the Philippines, Singapore-Malaysia, Indonesia, and that they bombed northern Australia (Port Darwin) as well as gave the Vichy French an ultimatum as to ‘let us in or face our wrath.’  The French colonial government knew they had no choice but to acquiesce and since the Vichy regime now allied itself with the Nazis and the Italians, they permitted the Japanese to use Indochina as a staging area for operations farther west and north.
The American people were angry when bombs began dropping on Pearl Harbor without a declaration of war on December 07, 1941, just as they were with the running battles on Wake Island, Guam, and in the Philippines, the defenders of which eventually had to sue for surrender.
Furthermore, the Japanese military overran Malaysia and conquered the ‘unconquerable’ bastion of British strength in the Far East, Singapore in a relatively short time.  Worst of all, the conquerors mistreated hundreds of thousands of captured civilians and military personnel such as the mass atrocities of the infamous Bataan Death March—LOOK IT UP MILLENNIALS!
Meanwhile, the Japanese landed in Indonesia and launched strikes on northern Australia to secure their southern flank while also claiming Burma and attacking the eastern fringes of India, Britain’s crown jewel of their empire.  Everything moved so fast and with so much brutality, that many people speculated that if we attempted to fight back, the Axis powers would destroy us and conquer our country—after all, a Japanese submarine shelled the city of Santa Barbara, CA,—where I live—shortly after the war began.  You can see why people were afraid.
What the Japanese did not expect was for the United States—even in the face of horrifying losses in the opening days of the Pacific war—would rebound and gear up for total war.  Our industries switched from consumer goods to military goods almost overnight while men answered the call to sign up and join the military in massive numbers.
What’s more, our industrial output dwarfed that of the combined Axis powers within a relatively short time, which allowed us to supply not only our troops but also the Nationalist Chinese, Great Britain and even the Soviet Union.   Despite heavy early losses in the Battle of the Atlantic, the United States shipped hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of military hardware and food to Great Britain and up around Norway to the only Russian port free of Germans in Arctic Russia.

Armed to the teeth, we entered the war with the intent of knocking out both Germany and Italy while fighting the Japanese with the Navy and the Marine Corps.  Through 1942, we fought long and hard but by 1943, the tide of war began turning against the Axis, especially the Germans and Italians although the fight would continue for about three more years.

The Russians were preparing the drive that would eventually carry them to Berlin once they liberated their homeland while we prepared with our British and Canadian allies to land on the shores of Fortress Europe.  After suffering horrendous casualties, Italy fell out of the war in 1944 while Nazi Germany after sustaining massive destruction surrendered in early May.  The only ones left to beat was the Japanese mainland who showed no intention to give up the fight.

We learned that fighting the Japanese was a costly affair, one in which, they fought to the death island-by-island and the thought of having to land on the Japanese mainland appalled many military leaders.  Estimated casualties for an invasion of the homeland were between 1-1.5 million, dead, wounded, and missing.  The United States—even with aid from the British, the Dutch, and the Soviet Union viewed that as appalling.  There had to be another way but no one knew what it might be but what they did know is that they did not want to fight another 2-4 years subduing Japan.
Those with knowledge of the Manhattan Project—the development of atomic weapons—alerted President Harry S. Truman as to the availability of a new ‘super weapon’ developed in total secrecy.  The builders surmised that it might swiftly end the war, but that its devastation would be unlike anything heretofore seen in the previous five years.  Truman debated the issue and the Allies pressed the Japanese to surrender but Tokyo refused every overture instead letting the free world know that they would fight to the last man, the last bullet, and the last foxhole or cave.  The toll for BOTH the Allies and the Japanese would have been worse than anything witnessed so far in the conflagration would.
We will pick up with the story early Saturday morning so make sure you join me tomorrow morning at 12:01 A.M. so we can continue the history lesson.
Thank you,
Jimmy Hall

This is me as a chef during the 1980's when we took a group photograph for a Chefs de Cuisine yearbook. At the time, I was working at a hotel in Bakersfield, CA, down on Union Avenue. It was still somewhat nice and the area was still the original "restaurant row" of the city.  Now, I am 70 years old and work over in Santa Barbara, CA, as a food and beverage director for a fine-dining country club.

In 1983, the Rolling Stones released a new album, one that we love, “Undercover.”  This particular Stones album many do not know exists but they should because it is very good.  Longtime fans of the group who were with them in the 1960s all the way through to the present view each album as its own unique organism.  Yes, the band always makes an attempt to evolve and evolve they do as this album features all sorts of vast and penetrating influences ranging from the 1980s’ synth sounds to the Afro-Caribbean power rock surging through it.  Say what you will, one must look at each album and allow the music to fill his, her, or its head to the point that saturation opens the door to the miracle of the music.  Please, use our link and go to Amazon.com so you can check it out for yourselves, you will love this album, we guarantee it.
