COUNTDOWN TO NEW YEAR’S EVE 2015…

The 12-Year Third Reich took the Allies a LONG TIME to erase…
Oildale, CA, 12-29-2015 Tuesday: Yesterday, I was writing about the difficulties of moving from a dictatorship to a nation somewhat free and how difficult the fight to do it can be.  Imagine the Third Reich, on the planet for a dozen years before the Allies consigned it to the deeper region of hell in 1945.  The Nazis indoctrinated an entire nation through using propaganda, education, the news media, movies, posters, and the radio.  Not everyone became a Nazi but most Germans were favorable to the regime and the military eventually all swore a personal oath of loyalty to the Führer, which most of them upheld even when the war clearly was lost.
Saddam Hussein was in power far longer than Adolf Hitler…was
Saddam Hussein comes to power in 1979 through a violent overthrow of the existing regime, which itself had come to power through another bloody takeover of government.  Saddam had TWICE the time Adolf Hitler and his Nazi henchmen had to instill a cult of fear and of personality into the people.  He rewarded his lackeys and punished his enemies, perceived and real in oftentimes public and extremely cruel ways.  Sometimes, he did horrible things to them in the privacy of one of his dungeons as his followers watched, learning the lesson that if you cross the ruler of Iraq, you could end up the way this poor schmuck did.  Very few crossed him and those who did paid a terrible price for having done so.
Saddam learned some lessons from his debacle in Kuwait…
Following the debacle of invading Kuwait and the rollback into the fringes of Iraq by the coalition of nations in 1991, Saddam Hussein knew he could no longer rely wholly on his military to protect and to defend both him and their country from future alliances and coalitions who might seek to remove him from power.  Prior to moving into Kuwait, his military fought a costly war with neighboring Iran who had attempted to subvert his power by stirring up the long downtrodden Shiite members of his population.  The dictator thought that he could easily defeat revolutionary Iran because they were in the midst of consolidating their power and at odds with most of the world.  Saddam guessed wrong.
Prior to Kuwait, Saddam made a major mess by invading neighboring Iran…
His military made inspiring gains within the first couple of days of crossing the Iranian frontier but after that, the attacks began to slow until they stopped altogether.  The Iranians managed to get their military going and their revolutionary cadres raced to the frontier to fight the secular invaders.  Saddam, a non-religious leader ruling over a very religious majority of Shias knew that if he and his generals did not press their unwilling troops to continue fighting that Tehran might very well engineer his defeat and takeover his entire country.  Only through the weapons supplied by the United States and others was Saddam able to prevent Iranian incursions from becoming routs.
Saddam Hussein idolized Russian thug dictator Josef Stalin…
His generals also paid the price for failure in much the same way his idol Josef Stalin punished his for failure: DEATH.  The Iraqi troops managed to hold more or less the entire frontier between their country and Iran and did so for more than eight years.  It was a horrible war, the loss of life was appalling, and not since the First World War did the world witness one nation using poison gas on another, hence the belief that Saddam Hussein had control of an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction, the vaunted WMDs.  He also fired Scud missiles into the territory of his enemy blasting cities and blowing up towns to the point that an un-resupplied Iranian military eventually had to sue for peace.
Only a line of credit and resupply of weapons kept Saddam from becoming a blip in Middle Eastern history…
The cost of the war drove Saddam to invade neighboring Kuwait, a country that Iraq claimed as one of its provinces but which the colonial British robbed them of so it could have full access to their oil.  Saddam was angry that fellow Arab states did not rush to pay his war bills because he viewed himself as the ‘defender of ALL Arab nations against the evil Shiite Iranians.’  Obviously, they did not concur with his views on reparations so he decided after awhile that the best way to pay off his massive debts was to invade and take Kuwait, robbing the nation of its oil fields and its wealth.
The invasion of Kuwait turned into a disastrous rout for the dictator…
As we know, it became a rout for him as the U.S.-led coalition rolled the Iraqis out of Iraq in double-time.  On the highway of death out of Kuwait and into Iraq, coalition air forces wiped the Iraqis off the map until a ceasefire took place and the remnants of their once-powerful army could escape home.  The fact that the combined nations that fought for Kuwait did not invade his country and go all the way to Baghdad, a mere 200 miles from the border with their southern neighbor and topple him, left a major impression on the dictator.  Hence, the thug gave his two criminal sons, Uday and Qusay the job of raising an irregular military force that if he somehow lost hold of power, the insurrectionists could break out and fight a conquering enemy in classic guerilla war style.
The Bush #43 Administration made worse mistakes than Saddam did in both his wars…
Unfortunately, the Bush #43 administration walked into that trap.  Most of America was not thrilled with a secondary war in Iraq and the bravado surrounding the demand that ‘Saddam get the hell out of Iraq or else’ opened the door to a near disaster.  Add to that the fact that Paul Bremer, the man in charge of post-war Iraq disbanded the military and sent its men home without jobs, money, or any way of maintaining their status fed the fire that would mushroom into a major blaze leading to massive problems with which, we still deal with today.  I will continue this line of thought tomorrow so please, make sure you join me here.  Thank you and God bless you all.

  1. Moses continues discussing the ongoing fight in Iraq by government forces and their allies so they can reclaim territory their ISIS foes have robbed from them. I agree with Moses that after having someone such as Saddam Hussein rules them for nearly a quarter-century takes away the initiative that most people possess and use to their benefit. I think it is highly interesting that Saddam was in power twice as long as was Adolf Hitler so we cannot expect great things from them yet. This is why we must support them with combat materiel. Let me know what you think about this or any other topic. / Posted by Chef Hector Santanamos of the American Institute of Culinary Politics-Elemental News of the Day, posted @ 10:11 A.M. PST
