“We discuss the Wonderful Island of Maui today, things Visitors here need to see as well as the Sad State of One of the Best Restaurants Here, the Once-Great Waterfront Restaurant in Maalaea Harbor:” by Chef Lilah Paulikovich

John Entwhistle released his next album (or let’s say his record company did) “The Rock,” came out in 1996 and contains music that he recorded in the 1980s.  Fans criticize it as some among us wonder why he did certain things after putting out two great albums in the 1970s but no one knows the reasons WHY artists do certain things. On this album, he only penned 3-4 of the tunes and handed vocals over to one of the musicians performing with him.  Still, some fans enjoy it while others are less positive in their recommendations so we leave it to the fans to decide for themselves.  Please, use our link to go to Amazon.com and check it out and if you think it worthy of purchasing, get it in the format, the condition, and the format that is right for you, your ears, and your pocketbook—you will be glad you did.

FALL SESSION 2015

BLOGPOST #1,774 AT THE AICP-END

Everyone must see the Sunrise from atop Haleakala at least once in his or her lifetime…
Bakersfield, CA, 09-30-2015 Wednesday: Today is the final day of the month and that is good because soon, we will be entering the cool-down period from the high 80s we have experienced lately down on the floor of the island of Maui.  I live up high on Haleakala in the town of Kula; one of the most beautiful places in the entire chain because many times, we are above the clouds.  This scenic area sits on the western side of the crater so we have magnificent views when we look out across the isthmus far below us towards the West Maui Mountains, Kihei, down below and the road out to Lahaina.  If you have never visited the islands, you need to come to Maui and take the drive up the slopes of the dormant volcano, the House of the Sun where for us; the world more or less begins every day.
Haleakala is dormant, has not erupted for more than 200 years…
You see, if you visit the island, you take the drive up the mountain well before sunrise so once at the top—in the observation booth—you can look towards the east and observe the optical illusion of the Sun suddenly popping up out of the volcanic tips of the Big Island.  For we who live here, it is a daily event but for the visitors, it is among the must-see happenings.   You have to start out early because sunrise is around 6:30 A.M. or so and the road up is an arduous trek if you have not made it before.  The observation center up on Haleakala is around 9,760 feet or so with the peak rising still higher above that, over 10,000 feet.  The entire area is a national park, named for the mountain and as you head up the Haleakala Crater Road, you will see the observatory connected with the park.  Be sure always to bring warm clothes because the weather is frigid up there and frostbite could occur if you do not prepare properly.
Haleakala and Kula are places everyone must visit at least once
Once you have enjoyed the visual stimulus of the sunrise from the top of the world, you can drive down to the Kula Lodge to have breakfast and then to begin the trek back down to civilization.  If you like, you can visit the Kula Marketplace, a place where all sorts of fine products are available for purchase by you, the visitor.  We have Maui Wine Company that makes some of the most delectable pineapple wines along with several others and all sorts of homemade jams, jellies, and preserves featuring local island fruit.  I love living in Kula, it is among the most beautiful places one can ever hope to visit coming to the island and is only about 40 minutes or so to drive up the road from Paia to Kula and onto the winery outlet.
Whale Watching is always a great thing one can enjoy in the Islands…
One thing I do know is that we have more and more people moving to the islands and much of the old style of living sadly has disappeared.  Sugar cane fields gave way to more and more housing and towns that once were somewhat isolated have become larger with time.  Thankfully, the state and local government does its best to preserve the way of life we who have been here for generations have grown to love while making room for newcomers who wish to take advantage of the wondrous style of life we have.  Everything is so ono, meaning ‘good’ in Hawaiian that many who come here become lifelong fans of the islands in general and Maui in particular.  I urge everyone to come in early winter so you can see the Humpback whales breach the waves on the southern shore off Maalaea Harbor, right off the deck of the Waterfront Restaurant, which now sadly is closed.
Some Restaurants such as Mama’s Fish House will always be there…
Some restaurants last forever while others seem to implode, albeit slowly.  Take for instance the Kula Lodge—that place has been here forever while the Waterfront, well, they have had their ups-and-downs, shut their doors, reopened them, and then shut them again.  Another place, Saltimbocca, opened in their place and they, too, did not fare well.  I think the economy is a difficult thing for many restaurants, even here in the land of magic but we have to find ways we can compete, to keep our doors open, and to make things new so our customer base continues to expand.  Places such as Mama’s Fish House in Paia are always there so when guests come back year after year, they can continue to enjoy food they know is always going to be the way they remember but will continue to evolve, improve, and become legendary.
The Waterfront Restaurant had success for a long, long time…
In closing, many people who come from offshore and open businesses here such as the Smiths who took over the Waterfront in 1990 may have had success that went on for more than two decades but cannot keep it going.  People have issues with liquor licenses; they lose them through bartenders or foodservers serving underage patrons, which can get one into trouble anywhere.  It is a daily fight meeting the requirements of the Department of Liquor Control as well as the county health departments.  People who operate places for lengthy periods can bring the onus of state atop them if they do not respect the culture in which they operate, work, and live.  What happened to the Smiths can happen to anyone, it is what it is.  The site of the Waterfront-Saltimbocca is a prime site but the facilities are old, the kitchen cramped, and eventually, it will no longer be feasible to keep it going.  Such is the sad state of the situation.  Maybe I will look into buying the place.
Maybe I will look into buying the restaurant…

PLEASE BUY ALL OF THE ALBUMS WE ADVERTISE AT AMAZON.COM!
PLEASE SEE MUSICAL ALBUMS AT THE END OF THE BLOG
As always, we have a great time around here and that is why we want all of you to become a part of the organization by submitting articles to us for inspection and full-credit.  It is a great thing if you would do this, as it is a symbiotic relationship: we give you the space to share your recipes and in return, you send us more and more people who will become dedicated followers of the AICP-END
Currently of multi-diversity across the Internet, it is important that we hear the voices of more and more people from all walks of the foodservice profession —join us. We urge our readership to write to us, leave comments, and if there are any of you, who would care to write an article for us, please get in touch via Magnolia Hilltop Brewers, P.O. Box 20669, Bakersfield, CA 93390-0669.  We obviously do not pay anything but give YOU full byline and that, my friends, is worth its weight in gold.
We want as many people who want to write to be able to do so and we believe that by presenting a forum for our fellow chefs, we are doing something for our beloved industry.  We love diversity and hope to add new and different authors to our pantheon of chefs, food and beverage directors, and culinary professionals.  Come on and join us, it will be fun! Expect that when all of us have run through our cycle, we will be introducing some brand-new talent or so Stinky says.
We have touted the AARC Technology Company here in Bakersfield, CA, and must add the Nerds on Call.com folks.  Without them keeping our blog up-and-running, there is no telling where we would be now.  We have a great many problematic issues here at the AICP-END because even with the best security systems in the world, malware and other terrible fecal materials manage to penetrate the blog site.  Do yourself a favor, hire the best, and note, you can have online help via a remote button on your desktop for just $25 per month!  Get in contact with the Nerds now!
Here is another note: do NOT do business with Galkos Construction, Inc., those people are nothing but crooks as if you lease your system, you will never pay it off, plus you have to pay them for excess energy produced by your system, the electric company does not buy all of it nor do they!  AVOID GCI AT ALL COSTS; DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE CROOKS!
We are selling recipes all the time and you can order things you would like copies of simply by mailing us your name, address, the recipe you would like and a check for $1.00.  You can buy an entire week’s worth of recipes when we do a series simply by sending us a check or money order (no cash please!) for $20 and we will have it out to you in the next day’s mail.  Please become a part of the AICP-END by sending us your names, addresses, and information and we will welcome all of you with open arms.
To buy paintings, recipes, or full article series, please send us your information by mailing us at P.O. Box #20669, Bakersfield, CA, 93309-0669.  You can call about paintings at 661-374-1430; we will take all calls and provide to you as much information as is available.  It is time that we begin taking the next step and to immortalize Beverly Carrick for eternity and begin moving towards the establishment of a website of our own! God bless each single one of you amongst our fan base!
I am sorry if we got off track today but sometimes, it is good to set aside the political debate in favor of something much more casual.  At one time, we discussed food almost exclusively and gravitated towards politics because this is what seems to dominate the daily news.  Well, today, we talked about Maui, the greatest place I know and love, one everyone who visits here typically loves, too, taking away a gift from us to them with which, his or her hearts keep it lit forever.  My hope is that a once-great place such as the Waterfront Restaurant can find a way to reopen its doors, perhaps with my help or my financial investment.  I would love to do it because it is a marvelous place to sit on the deck, watch the whales burst through the surface yards away from one while he or she enjoys a Caesar salad and a glass of wine.  Ah, well, we will return to the daily grind tomorrow, on what we used to call “Hump Day’ here at the blog but have long since let go.  I will see you all tomorrow, God bless and aloha!
The Closing Words of our Founder, Stinkbug:
Anyhow, let us close with this impassioned plea—please leave some comments and/or become a follower. What's more, why not spend some money and purchase an album by the Who, John Entwhistle, Keith Moon, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, TEN YEARS AFTER, and everyone else we advertise here and/or buy a book by any of the authors we advertise here! In addition to that, we occasionally offer cookbooks and other oddball items so always pay attention to whatever you find in the tabs on the right side of the home page, everything you need is there!  Allied with them, we are pleased to market their merchandise!  Amazon.com is one of the greatest—if not the ultimate greatest!—online department stores in which, one can find almost everything on the planet.
As everyone knows, we love them and they love us and we want all of you to visit them daily, take advantage of their deals on everything from kitchen equipment to cookbooks, CDs, DVDs, and everything else a person could want.  Everything you buy from them puts money into our pockets, which allows us to keep this fine blog up-and-running 24/7/365!  God bless America and God bless Amazon.com, the world’s largest online marketplace in the world and most likely in the Universe!
Thank you!

  1. We take some time off today by allowing Lilah to share her thoughts about her home state. The restaurant business can be dog eat dog but the good ones always seem to last forever while lesser ones fall by the wayside. Anyone who lives in a city of any size understands this sad situation. Here in Bakersfield, California, most independent restaurants—with the exception of ethnic joints and chain restaurants—have all fled the field because they cannot compete. Is this good? No, I do not believe so but it is what it is, folks. Please join us today so you can learn a bit about the islands, we thank everyone for coming today. / Posted by Moses Scharbug III of the American Institute of Culinary Politics-Elemental News of the Day, posted @ 10:34 A.M.
