“Political Topics and Essays, Part CDXLVIII: Politics fall by the wayside today as Chef Itzi discusses Time and Distance in the Hawaiian Islands, the Best Time to Visit, Hurricane Iniki, and the Winter Months” by Chef Itzi Nakamura

The next CD by Procol Harum came out in 2004 and is entitled, “Live at the Union Chapel,” a CD that is available in DVD form, too.  The album features the band in its reformation sans Robin Trower but with Matthew Fisher.  The band performs 11 of its tunes from beginning to this point in time and is a darned fine CD.  However, the DVD—at least at this time—does not contain the format necessary for it to play on U.S. DVD players, which sucks.  Please seek the CD out at Amazon.com where you can buy it for a great price in the format, the condition, and the price that will ring your bell.  It is a lovely CD!

SPRING SESSION 2015

BLOGPOST #1,621 AT THE AICP-END
Today we ‘talk story’ about Hawaiian stuff
Bakersfield, CA, 04-30-2015 Thursday: It is the final day of the month of April; all I can say is that I am flabbergasted at how quickly this month has flown by.  It seems like once one exits his or her thirties, life begins gathering momentum and before you know it, it is time to retire.  At least when one lives in Hawaii—even with an increase in people—life tends to move at a much slower pace.  For instance, we live on Maui; I work in Kihei, on the southeast shore of the island where we have one of the most placid beaches in the world as well as some of the finest grand hotels and resorts.  My husband, Chono, and I live Upcountry so we have to drive up the Kihei road, head north to Kahului and then flip east so we can go up Haleakala where we live in Haiku.  Now, this takes a bit of time, approximately 30-45 minutes per day depending upon traffic or if we take one of the shortcut back roads and come at Pukalani.  This, too, can be time consuming, because the roads are generally no more than two lanes using the back ways.
Time and Distance are somewhat ‘different’ in Hawaii
Anyhow, on the western side of the island, out in Lahaina and on around the northwestern side, it can take 30-45 minutes to go from Kihei to Lahaina depending upon the traffic on the roads.  We look at it with the same “I don’t want to do this” that many folks living in Bakersfield and Kern County feel when they take the southbound Highway 99 and eventually the I-5 to go to Los Angeles, about a two hour trip to go the 150-160 miles to get wherever one wants to go in the city.  What I am saying is that time and distance are relevant to where one lives, works, and spends their off time (like those of us working in the foodservice industry have any free time).  We look at 30-40 minutes driving time the same way people do living in Bakersfield who want to head south to Magic Mountain or farther south, say to San Diego.  Going to either San Diego or up north to San Francisco are horrible trips of say six hours either way, horrible trips, which I am glad I do not have to make.
Going to Lahaina from Upcountry Maui is like going from Bakersfield to Los Angeles, California—a lengthy trip
What I am saying is that here in the islands, time seems to move by at a slower pace unless, of course, you live in Honolulu or any of the neighboring towns and cities.  For one thing, the roads on Oahu suck quite a bit as the freeway system is crazy and the pau hana traffic is, well, let’s not even go there.  Building an adequate road system is tough when you live on volcanic islands, as you rather have to utilize topographical features to one’s best advantage if you want to make the best roads but many times islanders must accept the fact  that four lanes is the best we can do.  The more people continue relocating to Oahu, the higher the buildings until you have more people living in a very small area than practically anywhere else in the United States.
Hurricane Iniki caused terrible Damage to Kauai—the Garden Isle
It all makes for a trying time when one wants to go somewhere and do it in a short time that is why it is better to live on Maui, Molokai, or Lanai.  Kauai is not so bad either, it is still in the developmental stage although I am not saying it is a mess or anything but, they did suffer a major hit from Hurricane Iniki back in 1992.  We though the hurricane was going to hit Maui but then at the last minute, it veered off, headed west, and smashed into the cities and towns of the island. Normally, we do not suffer many hits from tropical cyclones or hurricanes but in 1992 when Hurricane Iniki passed through, it devastated many of the towns and cities especially those on the southern shore where the core of the storm passed across it and took off roofs from most of the homes and businesses.
Yet, the People of the Islands pulled together and repaired the damage…
In the end, the Hawaiian people pulled through although we had help from outside as roofers from across the United States came here and helped us get the folks on the Garden Isle back on their feet.  That is what we do in Hawaii—we take care of one another, do a great job of it, and do our best not to rely on help from the federal government—something other communities within the continental United States could learn.  The storm—Hurricane Iniki—was one of the worst to hit the U.S. in a long, long time costing the state about $1.8 billion in repairs, aid, and hiring numerous people to help us recover.  Power at the time suffered a direct knockout on the island at as I recall, five, maybe six people lost their lives while others were injured.  Unlike Maui, Kauai is wider open whereas we have the 10,000-plus foot high dormant volcano on which, the people can shelter if a powerful storm confronts us.  Anyhow, sorry for getting off track today and discussing purely Hawaiian stuff, but that is how it is.  Maui No Ka Oi!
Maui is the BEST Island in the entire chain—Maui no ka oi!

LICORICE JOHN DEATH
As always, we have a great time around here and that is why we want all of you to become a part of the organization by submitting articles to us for inspection and full-credit.  It is a great thing if you would do this, as it is a symbiotic relationship: we give you the space to share your recipes and in return, you send us more and more people who will become dedicated followers of the AICP-END.  Currently of multi-diversity across the Internet, it is important that we hear the voices of more and more people from all walks of the foodservice profession —join us. We urge our readership to write to us, leave comments, and if there are any of you, who would care to write an article for us, please get in touch via Magnolia Hilltop Brewers, P.O. Box 20669, Bakersfield, CA 93390-0669.  We obviously do not pay anything but give YOU full byline and that, my friends, is worth its weight in gold.  We want as many people who want to write to be able to do so and we believe that by presenting a forum for our fellow chefs, we are doing something for our beloved industry.  We love diversity and hope to add new and different authors to our pantheon of chefs, food and beverage directors, and culinary professionals.  Come on and join us, it will be fun! Expect that when all of us have run through our cycle, we will be introducing some brand-new talent or so Stinky says.
THE FIRST FOUR LEGENDARY ALBUMS
We have touted the AARC Technology Company here in Bakersfield, CA, and must add the Nerds on Call.com folks.  Without them keeping our blog up-and-running, there is no telling where we would be now.  We have a great many problematic issues here at the AICP-END because even with the best security systems in the world, malware and other terrible fecal materials manage to penetrate the blog site.  Do yourself a favor, hire the best, and note, you can have online help via a remote button on your desktop for just $25 per month!  Get in contact with the Nerds now!  Here is another note: do NOT do business with Galkos Construction, Inc., those people are nothing but crooks as if you lease your system, you will never pay it off, plus you have to pay them for excess energy produced by your system, the electric company does not buy all of it nor do they!  AVOID GCI AT ALL COSTS; DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE CROOKS!
THE SINGLES A’S AND B’S
We are selling recipes all the time and you can order things you would like copies of simply by mailing us your name, address, the recipe you would like and a check for $1.00.  You can buy an entire week’s worth of recipes when we do a series simply by sending us a check or money order (no cash please!) for $20 and we will have it out to you in the next day’s mail.  Please become a part of the AICP-END by sending us your names, addresses, and information and we will welcome all of you with open arms!
THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION ’67-‘91
To buy paintings, recipes, or full article series, please send us your information by mailing us at P.O. Box #20669, Bakersfield, CA, 93309-0669.  You can call about paintings at 661-374-1430; we will take all calls and provide to you as much information as is available.  It is time that we begin taking the next step and to immortalize Beverly Carrick for eternity and begin moving towards the establishment of a website of our own! God bless each single one of you amongst our fan base!
LIVING OUT OF TIME

TOO ROLLING STONED LIVE
I am always happy to invite people to come to Hawaii but generally not from the month of November to March, as that is when we have most of our rain.  Many times, cheaper tours come during those months because everything is much more low cost, something that helps those with limited income to spend time with us.  It does get cold in the islands, cold during November-to-January—especially if one lives on Haleakala or down on the isthmus between the eastern and western parts of the island.  Some have a tough time comprehending that it can and does get cold but generally no less than mid-to-low sixties while getting into the seventies and eighties on a good day.
For those who come to visit us during those months, they suffer both the rain and lower temperatures so that is why most everyone comes during the warmer season.  What I would suggest to you is always to do your homework before you come and do not join a tour, come on your own, even if it is for 4 nights and five days.  Face it, that is better than not coming but once you come, you will fall in love with the island spirit and it will return with you to the mainland.  The only thing we suggest you do NOT do and that is to take any island rocks away from the island to wherever you emanate as that can bring about the anger of the goddess Pele.  It is common knowledge that those who scoff at our ways or make light of them have suffered exceedingly bad luck to the point that they must return the rocks to the island for their own peace of mind.  Laugh if you will, but it is true.  Happy Hump Day, I will see you all tomorrow, aloha, friends!
LIVE AT THE UNION CHAPEL
The Closing Words of our Founder, Stinkbug:
Anyhow, let us close with this impassioned plea—please leave some comments and/or become a follower. What's more, why not spend some money and purchase an album by Procol Harum, Robin Trower, Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, James Dewar, and everyone else we advertise here and/or buy a book by any of the authors we advertise here! In addition to that, we occasionally offer cookbooks and other oddball items so always pay attention to whatever you find in the tabs on the right side of the home page, everything you need is there!  Allied with them, we are pleased to market their merchandise!  Amazon.com is one of the greatest—if not the ultimate greatest!—online department stores in which, one can find almost everything on the planet.  We love them and they love us and we want all of you to visit them daily, take advantage of their deals on everything from kitchen equipment to cookbooks, CDs, DVDs, and everything else a person could want.  Everything you buy from them puts money into our pockets, which allows us to keep this fine blog up-and-running 24/7/365!  God bless America and God bless Amazon.com, the world’s largest online marketplace in the world and most likely in the Universe!
Thank you!

  1. It is aloha Hump Day at the American Institute of Culinary Politics-Elemental News of the Day so she leaves politics aside and discusses living in Hawaii, the fact that even with the ongoing influx of people, one can still slow his or her life down to a crawl, depending upon how one chooses to live. Most people work 8 hours a day then spend the rest of their time living the good life. She encourages people to come visit taking care to note the rainy months and the cold ones. Finally, she discusses the 1992 Hurricane Iniki strike on the island of Kauai and how it caused them serious issues for several years but fortunately, only 5 or 6 people died. Please join her today and see what she has to say, as there is ALWAYS something to discuss at the blog.
