“Political Topics and Essays, Part CDXXXIX: Cheryl discusses the Hawaii Marriage Equality Act of 2013, one that protects Religious Rights as well as the Rights of the LGBT Community in the Islands—it works REALLY well, people!” by Chef Cheryl La Tigre

Procol Harum released its next CD, “One More Time—Live in Utrecht, Netherlands 1992,” (1999), a great album featuring the band’s modern lineup, Gary Brooker being the leader of a great group of musicians.  Whether you can move on from the albums of the early go-round of not—“A Whiter Shade of Pale” through “Something Magic”—does not matter, you have to accept them for whom and what they are.  They are a phenomenal band and it is wonderful to hear Mr. Brooker singing and playing the piano.  We wished the band had never broke up but record sales back in the day was a tough business and one ‘unpopular’ album could doom a band, especially one with frigged-up managers.  You have 13 songs here that run the gamut of albums (mostly).  Please go to Amazon.com and grab this CD now!

SPRING SESSION 2015

BLOGPOST #1,612 AT THE AICP-END
The Aloha Islands are the Rainbow Islands in many ways…
Bakersfield, CA, 04-21-2015 Tuesday: One of the things that we do when those of us who out of state—but especially Hawaii—come into the lovely city of Oildale, California, is begin boning up on the news of the Mainland.  We do have news back home but it typically is never the same sort of news as what we see happening here on the Mainland, as this is where everything seems to happen and we are the destination where people go whenever they need a break from it. We are a liberal state, we have everything you can imagine that many states in the nation either fight against or would like to have but still are in the fight seeking.  Gay marriage, no problem, equal rights and protection under the law for Gays, no problem either.  We like to think of ourselves as the place that welcomes all people and groups and the one that denies no one because we are the 50th state of the Union and will continue being that for decades to come.
Are the Mainlanders really that hung up?
Currently, there is much upset on the Mainland over what happened in the state of Indiana where Republican Governor Mike Pence signed a ‘religious freedom’ bill, one that many Americans saw as a bill that discriminates unfairly against Gays.  We here in Hawaii, like to think of ourselves as progressives, even the GOP is more progressive here than in any other state of the nation to my knowledge.  In 2013, we passed the Hawaii Marriage Equality Act, one that former Governor Neil Abercrombie signed in November of that year.  We felt that as a state, we could respect the rights of every American and that if we became a Gay-friendly state that we would see an influx of visitor dollars as well as an increase in jobs of all kinds to take care of the inflow that soon followed passage of the act.
We have the Hawaii Marriage Equality Law and it works fine…
What’s more, we also have legislation on the books that prohibits any sort of discrimination in the islands against anyone seeking a job who is a member of the LGBT community.  We do prohibit anyone from denying housing to any member of the Gay community and will provide a brand-new birth certificate following receipt of a doctor’s letter denoting that a patient has undergone gender reassignment surgery.  I do not know how many other states do this but Hawaii does and will do so proudly.  The ONLY thing we do not permit is ‘men who have sex with men’ (MSM) from donating blood due to the possibility of the HIV-AIDS virus, something they may not like but accept because of all the other rights the state grants them.  However, I believe that is a small price the LGBT community must pay in order to receive the rest of their state-granted rights including the adoption of children and aid in doing so.
We welcome the LGBT Community to visit Hawaii as much as they like…
None should assume that we do not have our own homegrown group of conservative politicians who would love to see something to what we saw in Indiana happen here.  In fact, earlier this year, we had a group in the Hawaii House put forth House Bill 1160, one that would be as onerous as what we saw in the Hoosier State.  However, our marriage equality law allows religious institutions and church-owned businesses from participating in same-sex events if it goes counter to purported religious beliefs.  In so doing, we allow the LGBT community to receive services from those willing to provide them while allowing those with stated, strong religious beliefs not to involve themselves if it would cause them religious conflict and inner turmoil.  The surprising thing is that we have very few problems between any of our religious communities and the Gay community, something the Mainland folks might see, copy, and put into action.
In Hawaii, the Religious Institutions and Church-Owned Businesses have protections…
In the end, we cannot discriminate against anyone but for those who are deeply religious such as say, the Catholic Church here in Hawaii, they do not have to participate in a Gay wedding.  As for other businesses such as florists and wedding photographers, they must provide services if they wish to keep their doors open as the only ones who do not have to involve themselves if asked is if their business is a church facility or a church-owned business; all others must accommodate.  However, most people go where they feel welcome; there is no need for civil strife, unhappiness, or unrest in the Hawaiian Islands.  We like our visitors as they are what keeps us in business and all we ask is that people respect one another as the Lord and the Hawaiian Gods demand.
Both the Christian God and the Hawaiian Gods demand Respect and Love for ALL Humankind…

 PROCOL HARUM’S GREATEST HITS
As always, we have a great time around here and that is why we want all of you to become a part of the organization by submitting articles to us for inspection and full-credit.  It is a great thing if you would do this, as it is a symbiotic relationship: we give you the space to share your recipes and in return, you send us more and more people who will become dedicated followers of the AICP-END.  Currently of multi-diversity across the Internet, it is important that we hear the voices of more and more people from all walks of the foodservice profession —join us. We urge our readership to write to us, leave comments, and if there are any of you, who would care to write an article for us, please get in touch via Magnolia Hilltop Brewers, P.O. Box 20669, Bakersfield, CA 93390-0669.  We obviously do not pay anything but give YOU full byline and that, my friends, is worth its weight in gold.  We want as many people who want to write to be able to do so and we believe that by presenting a forum for our fellow chefs, we are doing something for our beloved industry.  We love diversity and hope to add new and different authors to our pantheon of chefs, food and beverage directors, and culinary professionals.  Come on and join us, it will be fun! Expect that when all of us have run through our cycle, we will be introducing some brand-new talent or so Stinky says.
 THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION
We have touted the AARC Technology Company here in Bakersfield, CA, and must add the Nerds on Call.com folks.  Without them keeping our blog up-and-running, there is no telling where we would be now.  We have a great many problematic issues here at the AICP-END because even with the best security systems in the world, malware and other terrible fecal materials manage to penetrate the blog site.  Do yourself a favor, hire the best, and note, you can have online help via a remote button on your desktop for just $25 per month!  Get in contact with the Nerds now!  Here is another note: do NOT do business with Galkos Construction, Inc., those people are nothing but crooks as if you lease your system, you will never pay it off, plus you have to pay them for excess energy produced by your system, the electric company does not buy all of it nor do they!  AVOID GCI AT ALL COSTS; DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE CROOKS!
 SOMEDAY BLUES
 MATTHEW FISHER/STRANGE DAYS
We are selling recipes all the time and you can order things you would like copies of simply by mailing us your name, address, the recipe you would like and a check for $1.00.  You can buy an entire week’s worth of recipes when we do a series simply by sending us a check or money order (no cash please!) for $20 and we will have it out to you in the next day’s mail.  Please become a part of the AICP-END by sending us your names, addresses, and information and we will welcome all of you with open arms!

STUMBLEDOWN ROMANCER
To buy paintings, recipes, or full article series, please send us your information by mailing us at P.O. Box #20669, Bakersfield, CA, 93309-0669.  You can call about paintings at 661-374-1430; we will take all calls and provide to you as much information as is available.  It is time that we begin taking the next step and to immortalize Beverly Carrick for eternity and begin moving towards the establishment of a website of our own! God bless each single one of you amongst our fan base!
 THIS WAS NOW ’74-‘98
I normally do not involve myself in commenting on these sorts of issues but as much as we have seen problems from one state to another regarding services for the LGBT community, at what point do we say, “We live in the 21st Century now, not in the past.”  We can accommodate almost everyone with the exception of child molesters and the like because same sex marriage is about LOVE, nothing more, that is what life demands we do, love one another and accept one another.  Anyone who seeks to deviate from the progressive path of the islands must first ask him-or-herself “WHY am I willing to discriminate if others are respectful to me?”  Besides, we have 8.2 million or more visitors coming here annually and that means if we welcome their money then we welcome them as who and what they are as long as they respect our rights to live our lives as we choose.  So far, it seems to be working fairly well so wouldn’t it be great if the rest of the Union could find a way to emulate the Aloha State as we have had a long history of celebrating our Mahu people as they were the creators, the healers, and even the warriors.  Aloha, people, I will see you all tomorrow for another amazing day in ‘Mainland Paradise,’ the city of Oildale, California.
ONE MORE TIME—LIVE IN UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS 1992

The Closing Words of our Founder, Stinkbug:
Anyhow, let us close with this impassioned plea—please leave some comments and/or become a follower. What's more, why not spend some money and purchase an album by Procol Harum, Robin Trower, Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, James Dewar, and everyone else we advertise here and/or buy a book by any of the authors we advertise here! In addition to that, we occasionally offer cookbooks and other oddball items so always pay attention to whatever you find in the tabs on the right side of the home page, everything you need is there!  Allied with them, we are pleased to market their merchandise!  Amazon.com is one of the greatest—if not the ultimate greatest!—online department stores in which, one can find almost everything on the planet.  We love them and they love us and we want all of you to visit them daily, take advantage of their deals on everything from kitchen equipment to cookbooks, CDs, DVDs, and everything else a person could want.  Everything you buy from them puts money into our pockets, which allows us to keep this fine blog up-and-running 24/7/365!  God bless America and God bless Amazon.com, the world’s largest online marketplace in the world and most likely in the Universe!
Thanks, my friends!

This is a photo of me back in the 1980’s when I was working at a hotel in Honolulu, HI, on Waikiki Beach.  I began my career in the early 1970’s when I apprenticed to cook under one of the masters on the Big Island where I was born.  I moved to Oahu in the early 1980’s after having worked in both Kona and Hilo, HI, and have been there for most of my professional career.  I have also worked on Maui for a few years (1995-1998) and have been on Kauai (2001-2003) before returning to Honolulu.  My goal is to prepare the next generation of chefs for the future and to help the underprivileged in their struggle to attain careers in the foodservice industry.

  1. Chef Cheryl discusses the sad situation we saw happening in the Hoosier State several weeks ago, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2015, a law that crashed and burned on debut. Here in Hawaii, we welcome the LGBT community and our Hawaii Marriage Equality Act minimizes the problems of other states because we also protect religious facilities and church-owned businesses from engaging in something they feel conflicts their beliefs. As for normal businesses, unless a church owns them—i.e., bakers and wedding photographers—they must be open to EVERYONE’S business, not just those whom they favor. We passed this law late in 2013 and our former Governor Neil Abercrombie signed it into law. Since then, everyone receives equal treatment, which extends far deeper than in most other states. We do provide NEW birth certificates to transgender individuals who have completed the process and have certified information from their doctors accompanying their petition. If every other state adopted our ways, I believe we would all be better for it. Please join us today.
