“Political Topics and Essays, Part CDXLIV: Cheryl closes the Week by discussing Music the Blog promotes as well as Music Hawaiians love such as “IZ”, how we miss him, and then the Hippie Invasion of 1969” by Chef Cheryl La Tigre

--> --> --> --> --> --------------------------
The final CD by Procol Harum for THIS week is a box set: “The First Four Legendary Albums” (2003).  This set contains “A Whiter Shade of Pale” through “Home,” four classic CDs to be sure (it would have been better had they added the fifth one, “Broken Barricades”).  If you want to get in on the ground floor, then you need to use the link up top to redirect you to Amazon.com so you can seek it out in the format, the condition, and the price that is right for you now—go there now, you will be glad you did. We have a special CD for you today since it comes up in the discussion, “Facing Future,” (2002) by the late great Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole. “IZ” was and still is one of the MOST beloved of all Hawaiian Islands performers, his version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow” remains one of the most beautiful versions anyone has ever heard.  We urge you to please, go to Amazon.com and pick this CD up now, you will love it, Chef Cheryl guarantees it.

SPRING SESSION 2015

BLOGPOST #1,617 AT THE AICP-END
I welcome the Introduction to Music I have never truly heard such as Procol Harum and Robin Trower
Bakersfield, CA, 04-26-2015 Sunday: I have to say that some of the music we share with you lately is music that I would not normally listen to, as I was not aware of it during the heyday of the various bands.  However, I must say, upon listening to the various CDs by Procol Harum and Robin Trower, I must say that I am overjoyed at making its acquaintance.  I think there was a magical time to the music of the 1960’s, you know, we went from rhythm and blues and basic rock-and-roll to seeing an explosion of psychedelic bands, progressive bands, all sorts of great things flowed out of the 1960’s to the mid-1970’s.  I am excited at the opportunity to introduce my ears to music we might never have known had we remained the sleepy little island state that we were.  We celebrate the diversity of Hawaiian and Pacific Rim music we still love Don Ho, and the all-time modern great and sadly missed, Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole who did the GREATEST version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow.”  If you have not heard him singing this song while playing his ukulele, then you have no idea as to what you are missing.
We miss “IZ”
I remember my papa telling me about the late 1960’s-early 1970’s on Maui and Oahu, how the hippie bands of the Bay Area would come over to go “local” with the natives.  We have always had a great deal of pakalolo here, what the Mainland folks called “Maui Wowee,” because it was so strong.  The kanakas living here ALWAYS smoked weed whether the law liked it or not because much like the Native Americans and the use of peyote, smoking pot figured into all sorts of ceremonies and celebrations.  Hippies came over to the islands-primarily Maui—because back in those days, everything was green, the population not as much as now, and there were lots of places up the slopes of Haleakala or even on Oahu near Punchbowl and other places where they could get in the groove.
In 1969, Hippies invaded Hawaii in earnest
Unfortunately, for many of them, the men found themselves beset by the locals who sometimes would beat the snot out of the hippies for fun and grope the hippie chicks.  My father said some got beat up fairly bad while some rapes occurred, as well, definitely not something, we talk about much but let us face it the difficult facts.   Let us say you are living in your state and suddenly bunches of dirty, unwashed kids, hanging out along the coast and then gravitating inland doing all sorts of strange stuff is bound to set off some alarm bells.  You see, the islands were always behind the times, more akin to the World War II era than what was taking place in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.  People wondered why all these young people wanted to come here and ‘pollute’ the area with their presence; it caused many quite a bit of concern.
We debate whether the Hippies brought Pakalolo to the Islands or it already existed here, no one truly knows…
However, the hippies also re-populated places such as Paia on Maui, an old sugar cane town that people were leaving to head elsewhere.  Paia is on the north shore of Maui between Kahului and the Hana Road, site of some great windsurfing at Baldwin Beach Park nowadays, and the influx of these mixed-up kids brought fresh blood into the islands.  The locals always viewed them with suspicion being that many did not have money or could find jobs so they became charity cases for local government to contend.  Over time, they became Hawaiian with the natives and places such as Paia town, Oneloa Beach on the south side of the island as well as on the Garden Isle of Kauai, and other communities up-and-down the slopes of the dormant volcano.  They spread to the Big Island and in time made it over to Molokai and Lanai as well as Kauai and their ancestors still live in and around these areas running famous vegetarian restaurants and the like.
In the end, the People tried to drive out the Hippies but many of them still live here with us…
Anyhow, in closing out the week, I will say this: some local people say the hippies brought pot with them when they began showing up in 1969 while others including my dad tell me, pot was always here and the kanakas smoked it.  At the time, however, he said that some people were up-in-arms over this steady influx because the amount of drugs, the flipped out nut cases that ended up in the county hospitals, as well as the FREE LOVE and all the rest of that now ‘glorious’ crap caused many Hawaiian citizens to say “Enough.”  They began trying to stem the flow but stemming the flow of a movement is difficult, especially if the cost of doing so continues to increase.  It is the same as with California and their illegal aliens, the illegals keep coming in because once the door opens, it is harder than ever to force it shut again and unless the government finds a way to do it, by the time you realize you have a problem, it is too late to fix it.
If you do not stop an Invasion immediately, it soon will get out of hand quickly…

ONE MORE TIME—LIVE IN UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS 1992
As always, we have a great time around here and that is why we want all of you to become a part of the organization by submitting articles to us for inspection and full-credit.  It is a great thing if you would do this, as it is a symbiotic relationship: we give you the space to share your recipes and in return, you send us more and more people who will become dedicated followers of the AICP-END.  Currently of multi-diversity across the Internet, it is important that we hear the voices of more and more people from all walks of the foodservice profession —join us. We urge our readership to write to us, leave comments, and if there are any of you, who would care to write an article for us, please get in touch via Magnolia Hilltop Brewers, P.O. Box 20669, Bakersfield, CA 93390-0669.  We obviously do not pay anything but give YOU full byline and that, my friends, is worth its weight in gold.  We want as many people who want to write to be able to do so and we believe that by presenting a forum for our fellow chefs, we are doing something for our beloved industry.  We love diversity and hope to add new and different authors to our pantheon of chefs, food and beverage directors, and culinary professionals.  Come on and join us, it will be fun! Expect that when all of us have run through our cycle, we will be introducing some brand-new talent or so Stinky says.
BBC LIVE IN CONCERT

I’LL BE THERE/JOURNEY’S END
We have touted the AARC Technology Company here in Bakersfield, CA, and must add the Nerds on Call.com folks.  Without them keeping our blog up-and-running, there is no telling where we would be now.  We have a great many problematic issues here at the AICP-END because even with the best security systems in the world, malware and other terrible fecal materials manage to penetrate the blog site.  Do yourself a favor, hire the best, and note, you can have online help via a remote button on your desktop for just $25 per month!  Get in contact with the Nerds now!  Here is another note: do NOT do business with Galkos Construction, Inc., those people are nothing but crooks as if you lease your system, you will never pay it off, plus you have to pay them for excess energy produced by your system, the electric company does not buy all of it nor do they!  AVOID GCI AT ALL COSTS; DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE CROOKS!
GO MY WAY
We are selling recipes all the time and you can order things you would like copies of simply by mailing us your name, address, the recipe you would like and a check for $1.00.  You can buy an entire week’s worth of recipes when we do a series simply by sending us a check or money order (no cash please!) for $20 and we will have it out to you in the next day’s mail.  Please become a part of the AICP-END by sending us your names, addresses, and information and we will welcome all of you with open arms!
CLASSIC TRACKS AND RARITIES
To buy paintings, recipes, or full article series, please send us your information by mailing us at P.O. Box #20669, Bakersfield, CA, 93309-0669.  You can call about paintings at 661-374-1430; we will take all calls and provide to you as much information as is available.  It is time that we begin taking the next step and to immortalize Beverly Carrick for eternity and begin moving towards the establishment of a website of our own! God bless each single one of you amongst our fan base!
LICORICE JOHN DEATH
I am glad we veered off course this week to discuss a variety of things because politics becomes overwhelming at times when one believes the common man and woman has little to no ability to influence them or to change the course of the society.  As with the hippies, a group we did our best to keep out but who settled among us became business owners who employed locals such as at Maka by Mana in Paia town.  Granted, I realize some of these places have undergone changes in ownership but as time has gone by, more and more places have opened all along the coastline whether they are oldies such as Mama’s Fish House or Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon.  If you wish to see some signs of a bygone era, please visit the islands, go to Maui, check out Paia and be sure to go Upcountry to Kula, site of the famous Rainbow Bridge concert in which, Jimi Hendrix did his thing in 1971.  You can find an album of the same name and even a film if you seek them out at Amazon.com.  A hui hou kakou—until we meet again, people, God bless and good luck.  Aloha Au la ‘Oe—I love you all, bye!
THE FIRST FOUR LEGENDARY ALBUMS
The Closing Words of our Founder, Stinkbug:
Anyhow, let us close with this impassioned plea—please leave some comments and/or become a follower. What's more, why not spend some money and purchase an album by Procol Harum, Robin Trower, Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, James Dewar, and everyone else we advertise here and/or buy a book by any of the authors we advertise here! In addition to that, we occasionally offer cookbooks and other oddball items so always pay attention to whatever you find in the tabs on the right side of the home page, everything you need is there!  Allied with them, we are pleased to market their merchandise!  Amazon.com is one of the greatest—if not the ultimate greatest!—online department stores in which, one can find almost everything on the planet.  We love them and they love us and we want all of you to visit them daily, take advantage of their deals on everything from kitchen equipment to cookbooks, CDs, DVDs, and everything else a person could want.  Everything you buy from them puts money into our pockets, which allows us to keep this fine blog up-and-running 24/7/365!  God bless America and God bless Amazon.com, the world’s largest online marketplace in the world and most likely in the Universe!
Thanks, my friends!

This is a photo of me back in the 1980’s when I was working at a hotel in Honolulu, HI, on Waikiki Beach.  I began my career in the early 1970’s when I apprenticed to cook under one of the masters on the Big Island where I was born.  I moved to Oahu in the early 1980’s after having worked in both Kona and Hilo, HI, and have been there for most of my professional career.  I have also worked on Maui for a few years (1995-1998) and have been on Kauai (2001-2003) before returning to Honolulu.  My goal is to prepare the next generation of chefs for the future and to help the underprivileged in their struggle to attain careers in the foodservice industry.

  1. Chef Cheryl ends the week by discussing the music promoted by the blog, music she has recently introduced her ears to, loves it to be sure. She discusses the music of Hawaii such as Don Ho and the one and only Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole, one of the most beloved Hawaiian singer-performers. In fact, she shares one of his best albums with the readership, then discusses the hippie invasion of the late 1960’s-early 1970’s and also the debate as to whether the hippies brought pakalolo with them or if we already had it here. There are people who take up the debate on both sides but one thing is for sure, the descendants of the original hippies still live here. Please, join us today and share in a conversation about something we normally do not discuss—local life and style.
