“Educational Writings-Discourse, Part XXXIX: the Life and Times of Beverly Carrick—World-Famous Artist, Part Eighteen!” by Moses Scharbug III

MOUNTAIN released their twenty-second album, “Official Live Mountain Bootleg Series #13—Renfrow Ferry, Glasgow, Scotland, 26-February- 2005” in 2006 like several of the previous offerings (2006 appearing to be a watershed year for Mountain recordings) and shows the band in a modern performance.  Sure, nothing is as good as the older stuff, I think most of us can and will agree on that but still—there is nothing better than seeing a musician with decades of performances under his belt and that is precisely what Leslie West gives the listeners!  Use the handy link posted above and go to Amazon.com and buy it NOW!  Thank you for giving us the credits!

Educational Writings-Discourse, Part XXXIX: the Life and Times of Beverly Carrick—World-Famous Artist, Part Eighteen!” by Moses Scharbug III

Bakersfield, CA, 01-08-2013 T:  Good morning on this wonderful Tuesday of the New Year, 2013 seems more like it would be an unlucky year due to the number more so than last year but then—we did not have all of the heebie-jeebies about what would occur when the Mayan calendar came to its end!  I realize that some among us had tremors that something would happen because how could all of the shows presented by the highly respected History Channel be incorrect, eh?  It was sort of, as if they kept the drumbeat alive trying to instill in us a horrible fear that something was going to occur, whether or not it was cosmic or within the earth, no one knew but look: here we are, no harm, no foul, we are alive and well.  That is, if you call living under the New Age of Obamaism is “well,” something of which, I am not sure.  Next month, payroll taxes, private taxes, everyone’s taxes are going to go up no matter what he and the house speaker accomplished or failed to accomplish.  I believe that now is the time when the Democrats are going to go all out in their attempt to destroy the Republican Party finally in the same way the Bush Administration did its best to ruin the Democrats and almost succeeded.  However, there was never any doubt as to whether or not President George W. Bush loved the country or not as there is with his successor.   My belief is that President Obama would love for nothing more than to be the kingpin behind the “transformation” of this nation into something of which, he is a proponent: socialism, of redistributing wealth to those lacking it while breaking those that have it.   Remember: elections have consequences and when you find yourselves breaking under this enormous financial strain, remember for whom you cast your vote and then slap yourselves in the face as hard as you can.  Idiots!

We have been discussing the life and times of Beverly Carrick Snow and her family over the past seventeen days and this is our eighteenth to be exact.  We saw that Brian Carrick had a complete mental breakdown; he lost his friends who shortly before this tragic event broke the band apart and went their separate ways.  He was making a grand attempt to give up the booze and dry out and in so doing, pushed his dearest friends to the wayside while he made every effort to go dry.  He knew that if he did not give up alcohol, that he would end up dead or in jail, guilty of killing someone while driving intoxicated.

Therefore, 1979 was a pivotal year, Brian spent six weeks in the mental hospital where his doctors finally discovered that he was a true manic-depressive—bi-polar if you will—and immediately put him on a regimen of lithium carbonate along with the thorazine and the klonopin they already were giving him to keep him placid.   Occasionally, his wife came to see him but she was busy elsewhere so only his grandparents, uncle, and aunt came to see him several times a week.  His mother, Beverly, was busy in her new home in Salinas and only saw him during Christmas, something that left a horrible scar upon him but hey!  He was a grown man, it was up to him to make his way in this world or to fail and fall apart.  There was little sympathy coming from someone who had gone through the sorts of problems she had undergone beginning as a child.

As 1979 became 1980, this was the beginning of the greatest twenty years of Beverly Carrick (Snow’s) life (she kept her married name as her business name): with the help of her husband John, she and he drove the length of the state of California and the American Southwest going on seed deliveries and taking paintings to new galleries.  She painted her heart out, as you have seen if you have been a regular here at the blog, we have presented a painting a day for more than two years now and most of the time, we do not present the same one more than once or twice.  This was the period in which, she began numbering her images and copyrighting each one of them so friends in the People’s Republic of China, you can lift all the images you wish from our blog in order to make counterfeits but you cannot sell them anywhere in the western world.   Our attorneys regularly track down the dastardly art thieves and bring them to justice.  Yes, you can hide in China but that is fine, come to America, however, and we have you!
Beverly and John Snow out to dinner in the 1980's...

Beverly Carrick was now hanging in numerous galleries and it was clear that both the 1980s and the 1990s were going to be phenomenal, there appeared to be no end in sight.  She and her husband, John, lived a great life.  They went to his bowling tournaments across the country where he always came in towards the top and attended dinners for a wide variety of functions.  They went to many agriculture functions and one time, it took them to Hong Kong and into China, itself.  They traveled to many parts of the world and throughout the nation, selling paintings, seed, and meeting and greeting new customers in the various galleries, which now displayed her work.   The money was pouring in, both from John’s seed company and from her artwork.  She sold originals; she sold prints, lithographs, giclees, and even greeting cards through Leanin’ Tree Greeting Cards Company.
John and Beverly Snow at the Sakata Open House, Salinas, California...

In Salinas, there was a certain clique that never would accept Beverly as one of them because of loyalty to John’s first wife, who was a big player in the politics of the area and whom they saw as maligned by her ex-husband.  John’s daughters were cool to him and seldom came to see him, something that troubled him greatly but something, which he accepted as part of life.
John and Beverly Snow out for the evening at another function...

Brian got out of the mental hospital in January of 1980 and not long after that, he divorced his first wife.  When he returned to Freddie’s Top of the Hill, the owner fired him because of his nervous breakdown and his time away from the job.  Mama Jean Giovanetti had no love for the ailing young man and was a cutthroat ex-wife of a minor Mafioso.  Her sons—Chuck and Steve—not by Freddie Giovanetti, were both worthless but Steve was the worst.  She was determined to make something of them and so when her former chef returned to work, she told him to “get lost,” which broke his heart again.  He was at a very difficult point in his life and found himself drawn up to Bakersfield College where he spent an entire year taking three overload semesters while working as a baker at Zingo’s Café on Pierce Road (now Buck Owens Boulevard) on the graveyard shift.  There, he met Nora, someone with whom, he fell in love and had a two-year relationship.

Beverly and John Snow at the Suppliers' Dinner in San Diego, California...

In November of 1981, the BIG TIME finally called him as Executive Chef Juan Aguirre of the Stockdale Country Club called him to come in and become the night sous chef.  Elated, he showed up for work and began a difficult first year but within the first few months, found the woman who would become his second wife, Kay Frances Langer.  He was at first put off by her but then, lighting struck the two of them, she left her husband, he offloaded Nora, and soon the two were living together at Shamrock.  On the few occasions when Beverly came to town, she had the privilege of meeting Kay, whom she liked a great deal as did her husband as she found her to be so much better than poor Nora, someone whom Beverly looked down upon due to her southern ways.

By 1982, Kay and Brian had married and over the next eight years came to major success at the country club where she became the assistant floor manager underneath a horrible woman named Peggy and he went on to greater fame and glory writing for the local newspaper each week in the What’s Cookin’ foodservice column.  Both became members of the American Culinary Federation, Incorporated and went to the various dinners put on by the other chefs in town or went to Los Angeles with Chef Juan and his wife Mary, to functions there.   It was a great time in her son’s life and that of his second wife.

Patrick meanwhile was doing quite well at the law firm in which, he worked and he and his wife were able to take lengthy vacations and went to Europe a number of times, Hawaii, and to resort areas throughout the country. Everyone was doing well and there seemed to be nothing that could go wrong and by the time 1988 came around, Brian and Kay had decided that they would vacation on Maui as that is where her family lived being natives there.
Kay and Brian Carrick, Christmas 1982 at Beverly's brother's house...

The problem with Brian was that when Dr. Kelly, the prescribing psychiatrist put him on lithium was that it eradicated his depression but it increased his mania to a very high level.  At some point around 1986, he approached his shrink and asked him for some sort of help with the increasing fatigue that he was experiencing at the country club due to the high volume of business.   He and the executive sous chef, Augustine, had bought street amphetamines from a relation but those sorts of drugs tend to build up a tolerance that requires increasingly larger doses to get the same effect.  In addition to that, it was throwing both of them off in their personalities so Brian sought his doctor’s help.

Dr. Kelly said, ‘no problem’ and gave Brian a brand new medication called ‘Sanorex’ or  its generic name, “Mazidol,” a diet pill that was supposed to be very good, not habit-forming nor addicting, and didn’t cause problems with one’s psychological chemistry—all excellent inducements.  Furthermore, he gave Brian a good-sized quantity and when he first filled it, he discovered that one had to take but one tablet in the morning and it provided energy at a comfortable level throughout the day until one was ready for bed.  Then, it allowed the user to fall asleep, sleep well, and get up the next day feeling very refreshed, ready for a new day.
Brian Carrick at a buffet at the famed Stockdale Country Club...

Armed with this large quantity of medication, there was enough for the executive sous chef, the head of the apprentices, and for Kay, Brian’s wife, to each take one per day and still have leftovers.  They obviously did not tell the head chef nor did they tell the other line cooks, they kept it their secret, locked up tight in one locker at work or another.  Soon, the four were breezing through their workload, sometimes 12-18 hours per day, quite easily and for all, the money was rolling in, mostly overtime.  The amazing thing about the Sanorex was that it was so mellow; it did not give the normal anxiety that street speed normally does so everyone was quite complacent in his or her dealings with others.
Kay Carrick at Stockdale Country Club during the 1980's...

Months went by and then years and Kay was the first to go off the drug leaving the other three men to continue on using the drug.  Dr. Kelly kept prescribing refills and they kept taking it, no questions asked or any problems of which to note.  The one thing Dr. Kelly did NOT tell Brian was that normal usage of Sanorex was about 2-3 weeks in order to help someone troubled with excessive appetite to lose it.   He never told Brian this so no one knew and towards 1989, the year that he and his wife were moving to Maui, he fell into an emotional affair with the pantry girl, Olivia, twenty years younger than his wife did, Kay did.  You see, Kay was ten years older than Brian and by all accounts, when he met her, she was the hottest woman working at the country club and virtually all of the male members of the club desired her as did most of the kitchen and floor staff.  Brian, however, was the one who caught her eye and their whirlwind relationship, marriage, and loss of husband or spouse to be, pretty much shocked the club.  They were the hot pair of the Stockdale Country Club scene and everyone knew it.
Brian Carrick during a New Year's Eve Stockdale Country Club Party in the 1980's...

Why then did Brian screw up his relationship?  No one can answer that question including him and when he or she moved to Hawaii, his or her relationship was damaged from the start.  He had promised his wife that there would be no more contact but then she found his post office box at the post office down the road in another town south of Kahului.  This led to a breakdown in their relationship although it took them another decade finally to come undone and a move to Washington State in late 1995.  They struggled back and forth and over the course of this time, Brian found other women among the staff of the hospital at which, he worked to ease his pain.  The main problem was giving up the Sanorex as even he began to realize that the drug was messing his mind up to the point that he was near to having a second nervous breakdown, something he fought hard to avoid until his Maui psychiatrist, Dr. David Logan, split the island and left him stranded.  After that, things began to fall apart rather quickly and only with the help of the dietitians at the hospital where he worked as a Cook III did he find another doctor just in time.
Brian Carrick on Maui, early 1990's...

Beverly was living the good life and had no knowledge of how badly things were going for her youngest son and on one occasion came to Hawaii on a business vacation with her husband to see him, his wife, and his in-laws.  She saw a completely different individual, someone who ballooned upward from a svelte 140 pounds to 260 due to the loss of the drug and a damaged metabolism.  Now, he could not keep the weight off his body, something he never before had ever had to worry about and she was depressed at what she saw.  He and his wife, Kay, put on a good show but she could tell something was wrong but figured it was his life to do with as he saw fit.  While she was there, she and Kay went to several art galleries who agreed to represent her in the islands with his wife serving as her mother-in-law’s agent.
John and Beverly Snow at a luau while visiting Brian and Kay Carrick, sometime during the 1990's...

We shall end our narrative here for today and let it be known that this is a difficult story for Brian to tell as he truly did love his wife but thought at one time that she and the bartender at the Stockdale Country Club, a big fellow named, “Jim,” had had an affair.  There were some pretty obvious reasons that made him think this and through the fog of his drugged mind, he did not see things as clearly, as he should have and so he fell in with Olivia, someone who would torment his mind for the next ten years.  Yes, this is nothing of which, any normal man should be proud but he did pay a heavy penalty over the next 9-10 years.   In the end, his mother and stepfather came to his aid and helped him through it and he would repay the favor to his mother at a later date.  We will continue tomorrow with more of this sad tale of a family possessed with talent but with some dark moments in its history.
