EDUCATIONAL WRITINGS-DISCOURSE, PART XL

Educational Writings-Discourse, Part XL: the Life and Times of Beverly Carrick—World-Famous Artist, Part Nineteen!” by Moses Scharbug III

Photo from long ago: Beverly Carrick as a young bride on her first honeymoon with Harry Carrick in 1947...

Bakersfield, CA, 01-09-2013 W:  Hello again, friends, it is good to be here with you once more as we come close to the end of our long narrative.  Beverly Carrick is someone we should know and admire for her lifetime accomplishments and for all of the joy she spread around the globe through the sales of her paintings.  People have always loved and admired her work as she has the unique quality of being able to capture the images obtained through either her physical eye or that of her mind.  She then is able to put the image into her brush strokes and transferring it to the canvass.  It is amazing, the abilities she has snagged from around her and then put out there for the entire world to see.  No, throughout the course of humanity, each century produces one or two major artists who go onto represent it around the planet and into the cosmos and Mrs. Carrick is one.  Buy your paintings now while you have the time, ability as one day, we are going to sell every painting, which is going to leave nothing but prints, giclees, and lithographs.
The Snow's home in Calistoga at 1552 Centennial Circle...

We were discussing the late 1990s and Beverly and her youngest son, Brian, and his wife, Kay, who had been living in Washington State since 1995.  Beverly and John had moved to Calistoga, California, in the early 1990s when John sold his business and decided to retire.  He was tired of the bank pressuring him to take a smaller salary due to the amount of the loans he had with them because let us face it: agricultural businesses are shoestring operations at best.  Many times, a supplier has to extend great amounts of product to his or her customers before payment arrives and sometimes then, the purveyor receives a bum check and has to visit his client repeatedly to obtain payment.  This was the case for the John Snow Seed Company when owned by John Snow, he sold seed during a good economy yet, he would not know it.   His customers many times made him wait 4-5 months, if not longer, to pay him, which caused him to seek help from the banks located in Salinas.
John and Beverly Snow with friends, Kathy and Donny Palla...

Now, John loved to live “large,” he had to have a brand new car every year and one of the best homes in the city.  He and Beverly went out on the road a great deal delivering seeds, going to art galleries, and also to personal events like bowling tournaments, class reunions, vacations, and to Harvey’s in Lake Tahoe where the Snows celebrated every single New Year’s Eve since they married.  There, they were feted as though they were royalty, which is something both John and Beverly enjoyed, dining on the best foods, being given loads of money to gamble and credit on the house, and the best suites—all on the house.  They got all of these fabulous perquisites because John enjoyed gambling and generally spent a great deal more than what the house comped.  John lost more than he won but when he won—he generally won big.  That allowed him to fete Beverly with furs, jewelry, and anything else she desired.
Beverly and John Snow at an art show in Phoenix, Arizona, in the 1990's...

Back to the bank: the bank pestered John to reduce his salary as president of his own company and to put it back into the business so that it would remain in the black more than not.  John kept putting it off, it irritated him to have outsiders telling him HOW to run his business and finally, he said, “Enough is enough” and sold the company to his lieutenant.   He and Beverly decided that the time had come to retire and that the place to which, they wanted to go was to the tiny resort town of Calistoga, California, where they bought a home on the golf course.   It was a magnificent home, located across the street from both the town’s golf course and its fair grounds.  It was the best money could buy and they quickly became a part of the town’s inner circle of well-known residents.
Home in Oildale prior to burning down...

Now, Beverly was always very frugal having grown up on Robert’s Lane in Oildale, California, the place where her parents and grandparents made their home.   She wanted out of there so badly that she chose to marry Harry Carrick, a man more than a dozen years her senior and who, as we know it, was one of the worst husbands in the world.  However, she chose to throw in with him and to remain married to him so that she would NOT HAVE TO RETURN TO HER ROOTS and could eventually free herself at some point in her life.   Several days ago, we referred to Eva Peron, granted, maybe not the best person in the world with which, to be compared, but the motivation to climb the social ladder is quite similar.  She had to be successful and so while married to John Snow, she had become wildly so.
New Year's Eve 1996: John and Beverly Snow at the famed Spanish Bay Resort...

The problem now, however, is that they had a certain amount of income but no longer had that of the business, having put about half-a-million dollars into their new digs at Centennial Court in the sleepy tourist town.  The rest of the money they made from the sale of the company went into paying down debt, relocation, and into new cars, furnishings, and their final trip or two.  They had saved up a decent retirement amount but locked the bulk of it up in low yield investments like certificate of deposit accounts, not risky or high revenue accounts.  They were now reliant upon his social security and her sales as an artist, good enough, but not good enough for her as the art world was in a mild state of recession.  Now that her husband was retired, he could no longer afford to live life in the way in which, he had been accustomed to doing as she no longer felt they could afford it.  She had to clamp down on the expenditures, as she was now the sole breadwinner, who meant that her husband now had to become her framer, her shipper, and her helper, something he gladly did but no extra perks.  No more could they go to Las Vegas, much less gamble, nor could they afford to live large, high and mighty, nor could they buy a new car each year.  This began to cause some friction but they persevered.
Patrick and Karen Carrick in the 1980's...

Add to this state of affairs, two problems dropped into their laps, something unforeseen.  The first was Beverly’s older son who had incorporated with a business partner who seemed to be a good risk but who turned out to be a horrible one.  This unnamed law partner was a good fellow by all accounts, at least, he seemed that way, but as time went by, it was clear he was bi-polar—and a bad one at that, too—which put Pat at risk of going under and losing everything.  Beverly and John came to the rescue and saved their son by giving him the necessary financial assets with which, to end his partnership and to save his finances from being destroyed.
New Year's Eve 1992 at Harvey's Lake Tahoe: John and Beverly Snow...

The other problem was that Brian and Kay’s marriage came to a somewhat violent end; something everyone knew was coming but could not quite foretell.  The initial problem was as we said the emotional relationship between Brian and Olivia, the pantry chef at Stockdale Country Club in the year prior to Brian and Kay’s move to Maui in 1989.  The second was how he mishandled it, the third being her descent into alcoholism and mismanagement of their finances.  When he was able to qualify for a loan from the Hawaii State Employees Federal Credit Union to pay off their debts in 1994, he put it into his wife’s hands in order that she pays off their debts.  She committed an act of heinous proportions by using it pay off every debt of her youngest son, Leo.  When Brian found out what exactly she had done, he was devastated but by that time, it was too late, it was a done deal.  He wanted to destroy her but in the end, had to leave a job he loved—working at the Maui Medical Center as a Cook III and leaving a place he loved, Hawaii—after filing bankruptcy and moving to Washington State so he could recoup his finances.
John and Beverly Carrick with a friend at the Arizona Art Show...

Kay and Brian were never right, she continued being a drunken floosy, and one night, it all ended when she picked their final fight and he knocked her on her butt as a show of his displeasure.  He then made her call the Whidbey Island Sheriff’s Office, as he knew his only way out after seven years of almost constant arguing and a loss of emotional stability were to make it so he could NEVER go back.   Within an hour—way too late had he been trying to kill his wife!—the first sheriff arrived and within another hour, he was arrested, taken to jail, fingerprinted, booked, and placed into a cell with four other men of similar circumstances and a pot farmer.  There, he spent the next 44 hours until a telephone hearing with the judge allowed him to return home.  The next morning, he moved into a trailer after going to work and then hired his stepson Billy’s former divorce lawyer, Lynn M. Hicks, and divorced his second wife.

Throughout this two-year ordeal, Brian received help from his mother and stepfather and was able to make it through living in a decrepit trailer, pursued by his wife begging him to “come home.”  The double-restraining orders allowed him to keep her at arm’s length while it kept him from going to her.  His attorney kept it in place until the day came when his probation ended and he was able to return home to California.
John and Beverly Snow aboard the M.S. Dixie on Lake Tahoe...

The above problem began in October of 1997 and he was out of the state towards November 1999.  He left for Calistoga the day he was free and after giving the Useless Bay Golf and Country Club two weeks’ notice.  Unfortunately, the Calistoga to which he went was now minus John who had come down the previous year with aplastic anemia and died before the year was over.  When the doctors diagnosed John, he was too far gone for them to save him and he died much sooner than Beverly thought he would.  She was devastated and welcomed the arrival of her son to help her.  Brian moved into an apartment within Calistoga and went to work at the local grocery store, cutting meat and working in the produce department.  Within six months, both agreed to return to Bakersfield, the town they both knew and of which, they had good memories.   This is where we will conclude today’s installment of our story, note that we are approaching the end of our tale and once done, we will publish a list of all Beverly Carrick paintings we have shown here at the Elemental News of the Day—American Institute of Culinary Politics since Day One.  Then, once that is over and done, we shall return to the culinary arts and hopefully, you are all going to be with us still!

Anyhow, let us close with this impassioned plea—please leave some comments and/or become a follower and why not spend some money and purchase an album by MOUNTAIN or West, Bruce, and Laing and/or buy a cookbook from Amazon.com—we want to make some money here so help us out by buying something!  Allied with them, we are pleased to market their merchandise! When we finish advertising albums by Mountain and West, Bruce and Laing, we will begin presenting albums by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention!  See you next time around! Bye!
