EDUCATIONAL WRITINGS-DISCOURSE, PART XXXI

HAPPY NEW YEAR’S EVE!

Educational Writings-Discourse, Part XXXI: the Life and Times of Beverly Carrick—World-Famous Artist, Part Ten!” by Moses Scharbug III

Bakersfield, CA, 12-31-2012 M:  Welcome to the December 31, 2012 edition of the American Institute of Culinary Politics-Elemental News of the Day, the place where we welcome the New Year’s with a bang!  Tomorrow, we commence our fourth year of production, fifth if we count the origins at Choseit.com, the place we first began blogging.  It is exciting to me that we have somehow made it through the prophetic December 21, 2012 date; you know the time when all hell was supposed to break loose due to the end of the Mayan Calendar.  Around here, that has been an ongoing countdown as Stinkbug is highly superstitious and tends to believe that all sorts of things were supposed to happen but as of yet—nothing except the ongoing murderous mayhem has occurred.

Do not get me wrong; however, we do indeed live in dangerous times.  We cannot leave our homes without fear of being attacked or killed by a drunken driver no matter how profuse law enforcement.   Police are everywhere or generally are except in areas controlled by Democrats because then, they use cuts in law enforcement and fire departments as a bludgeon on the taxpayers.  It is as, if you do not pay higher taxes, then I am going to make sure your lives are endangered due to cuts in the number of cops patrolling the streets.  Our governor, the worthless and crooked Jerry Brown perpetually threatens us with reductions in the necessary safety services as a way of beating us into submission.  In effect, he is little more than a union thug himself, like his boss, President Obama; they are good at threatening the citizenry of this fine nation with their evil threats.  Yes, maybe that is a sign that the End Times are ongoing because the America in which I was born is not the same America in which, I live my old age.   My wife and I have discussed the possibility of moving to Israel where Jews can be Jews without fear of totalitarians here at home making us into scapegoats.  Sure, they do not say it that way but when we have to fear random violence happening at our synagogues or schools, we must take appropriate countermeasures so we can keep our lives and those of our families.
Eva Peron of Argentina.

We have been talking about the patron saint of the AICP-END, Beverly Carrick and her life and times and those of her family.  We must be thankful to Brian Carrick, one of our associate bloggers here because he is our prime witness to much of what has happened in the life of his mother and that of his father.   It is a tragic tale, yet, it also is exhilarating because Beverly conquered the odds and made her way successfully through a man’s world.   In many ways, it might smack of Evita, Juan Peron’s mistress and wife; she underwent similar circumstances in her rise to power. We must hold up these experiences as an example for all women to emulate.   Beverly’s life with Harry is similar to what the wily Argentinean experienced over the course of her early life and that the lessons learned we did not forget.
Beverly Carrick (second from the left) at a social event in 1975.

As we saw, Beverly filed for divorce from her husband of more than 26 years in the summer of 1971 and for sixth months, the house was a battlefield of emotions as Harry refused to go until she forced him to do so by the divorce decree.   He left a broken man; he lost the battle while his ex-wife had grown stronger over the course of this horrifying example of marital disaster.   He found himself a small apartment and set up shop and it was not long before he began making demands.  For this, he wanted that and for that, he wanted this.  Child support for Brian was $100 a month and that was to pay for EVERYTHING.   If Brian wanted to go to college when he left high school, he would have to spend half the year living with his father, something the youngster simply could not do.

Brian was as shell-shocked as any modern day vet suffering PTSD from fighting in Afghanistan was or Iraq, what he had undergone all of his life was nothing compared to what he and his mother had undergone that past six months.   Living with Harry within the confines of Magnolia Avenue had been horrifying in the intensity of the anger, hatred, and dreadful words hurled back and forth between the participants.  His brother, Patrick seldom had come home and made an even greater effort not to do so now.   Harry had taken as much of the household property as he could and sought still more ways to force his will upon his ex-wife and son than ever before.  Soon, he was shadowing his ex-wife wherever she went, spying on her to see if he could find something that would alleviate him of spousal and child support.

Not long after he moved out, the compressor at 500 Magnolia Avenue blew out.  The house was a large one; it had more rooms and wended its way around this corner and that.  Power bills were high and the compressor was a big one, necessary to cool the size of the house and does it well.   Brian was the first one to hear the bang in the unit and reported it dutifully to his mother who responded angrily because she was upset.  She was under a great deal of stress to make ends meet and had just signed on with Howard Moreseburg as mentioned yesterday.

When the technician arrived to inspect the unit, he pronounced that it was going to be a major bill, as she had to replace the old unit and install a brand-new one.  Brian remembers it being around one thousand dollars, a terrifyingly large amount for the struggling woman as her ex-husband was responsible for none of it based upon the rules of their divorce.   In order for Beverly to offload her husband and maintain the home, she had to agree to make due with a low amount of alimony in order to do it AND get money to help pay for her remaining son’s needs.   Harry was not a stupid man, he was good at manipulating situations, something he had done his entire life and took great pleasure in doing so now.  If she wanted help in fixing the compressor, perhaps she should agree to a reduction in the already miniscule amount of support now as otherwise, she would have to go it alone.   In addition to that, his son had better begin spending weekends with him at his apartment as otherwise; he might fight for total custody in the courts, something that frightened both of them to their core.

Suddenly, Beverly found that she was selling some artwork at higher prices and the first checks came rolling in, just when she needed them.  With the newfound money, plus the money from her former agent due to sales for which he still owed her, she was able to fix the air conditioning unit and still have some money.  However, over the course of the rest of the summer, some other things broke down such as the sprinklers in various parts of the yard, something again that Brian noticed and reported to his mother.  Finally, enough stuff was happening that she told him to keep his mouth “shut” and ‘report no more bad news for awhile!’  He heard his mother and did as she told him but somehow, they survived the summer and made it through to the New Year.
Brian Carrick, founding father of the Magnolia Hilltop Brewers, behind the Drums in 1974.

Brian had spent the entire summer and the fall of his sophomore year hanging out with new friends he met at school.  Somewhere along the way, he and Randy Kyles formed a band and even though they were horrible musicians, they worked on during the weekends away from school and began finding and drinking alcohol.  The Carrick bar at home was still well stocked and they began making concoctions out of various liquors they placed in a jar, shook up, and drank.   Brian managed to go out several nights a week while his mother sat home alone, waiting for him to find time for her but the ongoing emotional battles had damaged his psyche deeply and he needed his friends more so than he needed his mother.

Beverly continued working hard in her studio, painting feverishly and selling her works to the Morseburgs who came to town on a regular basis, picked up new artworks and gave her checks for the works they sold.   Beverly finally decided that if her son was not going to stay home and keep her company, she decided that she would begin going out and dancing at the Hilton, the Rancho Bakersfield Motel, the Rodeway, or any other of the hotel bars that featured live music and where she could drink sodas and meet men.  She also joined the organization, Parents without Partners, and over time became one of the favorite dance partners by the fathers without wives.

She began going out several nights a week and came home late, more and more so on the weekends.  Brian had his friends to the house where their band practiced in the guesthouse as his brother, Patrick, had given it up.  He and his wife, Trisha, stayed in Brian’s old bedroom in the house whenever they came to town, which was not often, as he was now enrolled in the law program at the University of Southern California.   With Harry gone, it appeared that the remaining family members were intent on going their own ways.

Harry, meanwhile, joined Parents without Partners, in addition, so he could shadow his wife, which made her join the Mavericks, a much more adult organization that was more a social group than one in which single parents found partners.  They used to hold their dances at the country and western nightclub on Union Avenue, the Funny Farm, or the much more risky Wild Bill’s Saloon across the street on Eighteenth.  There, the booze flowed and the men and women buzzed around meeting one another for dates, dancing, and whatever else came up.  It was the beginning of a wild time in the lives of everyone, something that alarm3ed Beverly’s parents, Florence and Clarence Jamison.  On the rare occasions when Beverly went to visit them, she found herself under scrutiny and this caused her to visit them less and less.  Even Brian was somewhat concerned but was told to mind his own business.  Therefore, he and his friends, Randy, Victor, Gerry, and some others that came and went drifted into drinking, smoking marijuana, and doing psychedelics when they were available.   It was clear that the 1970s were indeed a period of liberation for everyone, including Harry, who found the wife of an old Mobil employee single and began courting her.  Her name was Mickey and she was bad news.   Likewise, Beverly met someone named Ray Wolf, a principal at a high school north of Bakersfield and he was not such a good fellow himself.

This is going to do it for today but note, Brian began working at the Royale Palms Hotel on Union Avenue in 1971 as a kitchen helper and left his uncle’s and grandparents’ employ at the Riverview Hobby Shop.   Beverly began dating Ray Wolf and Harry was courting Mickey, a somewhat deranged and wild former wife of a close friend and underling.  The year, 1971 was moving into 1972 and things were moving along quite well, it was a time of great successes and major downfalls, but as an artist, Beverly Carrick was beginning to prosper, something of which, she had long dreamed.  We will pick up here tomorrow, New Year’s Day 2013!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As always, we have a great time around here and that is why we want all of you to become a part of the organization by submitting articles to us for inspection and full-credit.  It is a great thing if you would do this, as it is a symbiotic relationship: we give you the space to share your recipes and in return, you send us more and more people who will become dedicated followers of the END.  Currently of multi-diversity across the Internet, it is important that we hear the voices of more and more people from all walks of the foodservice profession —join us. We urge our readership to write to us, leave comments, and if there are any of you, who would care to write an article for us, please get in touch via Magnolia Hilltop Brewers, P.O. Box 20669, Bakersfield, CA 93390-0669.  We obviously do not pay anything but give YOU full byline and that, my friends, is worth its weight in gold.  We want as many people who want to write to be able to do so and we believe that by presenting a forum for our fellow chefs, we are doing something for our beloved industry.  We love diversity and hope to add new and different authors to our pantheon of chefs, food and beverage directors, and culinary professionals.  Come on and join us, it will be fun! Expect that when all of us have run through our cycle, we will be introducing some brand-new talent or so Stinky says.

Friends, things have changed regarding the AARC Technology Company in Bakersfield, CA, we are now going to promote them over the course of time due to their making things right by us and helping us with our computer situation.  We do not wish to boycott anyone in this wonderful world and the fact that both AARC and Nerds on Call.com are on board with us is a good thing.  People, buy all of your computers from AARC Technology in Bakersfield, CA, they build the best equipment and make the best products and we hope that you check them out.  If the world is going to end, why not add a new computer to your wish list of holiday gifts as remember, it is only money and we cannot take it with us!

The power of this story is quite refreshing; no one knows where and how he or she will end up in his or her lives.  Right now, everyone is moving in his or her own direction with little input from the other.  It is clear that Brian required someone to watch after him and to keep him on track but the stress he had undergone in the last few years of living with his father tipped him over the edge of mental imbalance and he was beginning to show signs of impending trouble.   We must always supervise our children so that any deficiencies in their makeup do not go undiagnosed as they did in his case; it might have saved him years of misery but getting Harry out of the house was like opening the doors to solitary confinement with inmates going in every which way.

Friends, please buy your holiday gifts as soon as possible, so you if the world does continue, you and yours can enjoy them.  Nothing says “I love you” better than a Beverly Carrick painting and now that the artist has passed away, her paintings are invaluable.  Buy now by calling us at 661-831-2544 after looking at the beverlycarrick.com website.

For the fashion-conscious living in Bakersfield, California, please visit the Westchester Hair Company located in Bakersfield, California, on “F” Street above the famed KC Steakhouse.  Carol is the proprietor and this year, they have lost not only Beverly Carrick Snow but also Ron Lopez, one of the top hairstylists in the city.  We promote them and their abilities and want you to call them at 661-324-9864.  Please visit us weekly if you live in Kern County and if you live outside, please fly in once a month from any part of the world and have Carol take care of your hair—you will not be disappointed.  We recommend nothing but the best here at the AICP-END so please visit them and tell them that WE sent you!  Thank you!

Anyhow, let us close with this impassioned plea—please leave some comments and/or become a follower and why not spend some money and purchase an album by MOUNTAIN or West, Bruce, and Laing and/or buy a cookbook from Amazon.com—we want to make some money here so help us out by buying something!  Allied with them, we are pleased to market their merchandise! When we finish advertising albums by Mountain and West, Bruce and Laing, we will begin presenting albums by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention!  See you next time around! Bye!

Thank you!
